Chakra Element question..

i think in the manga or anime it said that everyone had an inborn affinity to one of the 5 elements which could be easily found out by using a special paper. When the person would flow his chakra into that paper, the status of the paper thereafter would indicate his nature type (paper is humid = water, paper turns to ashes = fire, paper tears in two = wind, etc...)
once the paper exercise is completed, he can focus on jutsus that uses the element to which he has an affinity to, as they will be easier to learn, use and master... there is the possibility of developing an affinity towards a second element through training but this remains hard even for skilled shinobis...
the only few that i know have mastered more than one element through the normal route mentioned above (i.e training instead of using forbidden jutsus like kakuzu, etc...) are hiruzen, kakashi and sasuke... let me know if you think of more people in the mangas

The current Mizkage has 3 elemental type chakras too. Some of the KG users have/had at least two, so that would add, Yamato, blast element users, Scorch element user, the 4 tailed jinjuriki had the lava element(earth/fire), Haku, Gurren (crystal style), the first hokage. Might be missing some. Theres also that wierd chick from the Sora filler arc who is like a chakra sucubus. I beleive kakashi stated that its normal for a junin to have 2 but more than that is rare.

yes we can count jiraiya in with those who have trained to master more than one element without any KG, bijuu or forbidden jutsu, etc... only sheer training and skills.

Is it rare for them to have two or to be able to manipulate both types of chakra at the same time?
What about Kisame as well he has what seems to be predominantly water based style afinity, but didnt he also use a earth style against Guy and his team with his sword sticking up out of the ground to look like a sharks fin? (this one just popped into my head)

But basically everyone is born with chakra that has an affinity towards one of the 5 types.
And you can learn and master as many as you want (although it takes skill and training) the difficult part is mixing (using them at the same time better said) 2 or more together to get an Advanced Type.
And yes the wielder of the rinnegan is the master of all elements... although it is not confirmed that he can/can't use an Advanced Type.

First and for all the only person known to be able to use all the elements are the Rinnegan users.
Some people say Kakuzu too, that's wrong. His elemental affinity is earth. The reason as why he can use the other 4 too is because he ripped out four hearts of other people and use their elemental affinities to preform all those elemental jutsu's.
In theory it's not impossible for people to learn 5 elements, however the feat is just almost impossible. Mastering one element is something that's already considered quite something and jounin, who are elite ninja's, have often mastered 2 elements, but that's not a requirement.
People that mastered 3 basic elements are incredibly rare. Kakashi and Mei Terume are some of the few who were able to do it. And those are kage lvl. Having 4 or 5 is pretty much impossible.
Every ninja always has an element for which he has an affinity, so he also has elements for which he has barely any affinity at all.
