We may be called nerd by others, but who cares anyhow.. We like NB! That's who we are, people have to accept it.
Anyhow, I'm an undercover anime fan, my friends don't know I watch Naruto, I just hang out with them, go shopping, go partying, and when I'm home for a few hours I find my rest in Anime, NB, homework, music and television.

If you are one of the people that hide that you partake in the anime/manga community......You have shallow qualities as a person I believe..Because if no ono will take your life for doing then why are you hiding it? Your that afraid of being called a lame? Like seriously. It doesn't get that crucial that you feel your self-image will be compromised. But I guess it is that serious for some.

honestly in my opinion watching and loving anime doesn't make anyone nerdy in any way because when you really think about it anime and cartoons are completely different if you set aside the fact that they are hand drawn.

be it DBZ, Rouroni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tail or any other anime out there they all actually have very deep emotional values and ideals throughout the story that you would never find in a cartoon, also anime's are one big, long, epic story whereas cartoons are different each episode. But seriously though animes have some of the best moral lessons to be learned whether it's about friendship, standing up for yourself, never giving up or always chasing your dreams without letting anyone dictate the way that you live. i have also seen some of the most emotionally tolling things in animes. i mean come on, i almost cried when Gray's back story was told and when lyra was singing(FT), and chopper's back story as well(OP),ok i didn't literally almost cry but that shit hit home, but even with such sad moments there are also so many moment's when luffy gave a mini speech that just made me want to go out and fight someone in the name of my friends, he really makes you value friendship man, and i know this one is strange but little Happy is low-key one of the deepest thinkers in all of FT, that speech he gave to byro was freaking insane, i literally watch it like once a week because it's just that deep and meaningful.

idk maybe this all makes me seem like even more of a nerd but in my opinion a story line as complex as most animes have is anything but nerdy it may still be considered a cartoon to many people but in my eyes it's much more than any cartoon will ever be and i think that if more people sat down and watch maybe like 2 or 3 episodes at a time for a few days they would dive just as deep into it as i have because the story is just that good.

and if all these thoughts make me a nerd, then so be it, i'm a nerd and proud because theres absolutely nothing wrong with liking anime

Yes. You must embrace your inner nerd, child! :p

In all serious, I wouldn't say we're the stereotypical types of nerd, but anime or manga isn't something everyone knows about or has an interest in. For that reason, it's not as socially comfortable in Western countries as it would be in Japan, where there's anime at every street corner.
Most people would simply call it cartoons from face-value alone, only because they have yet to realize how different it actually is.

All in all, don't be ashamed of liking anime, or reading manga, or decorating your room with bright-coloured figures and posters. xd

I saw alot of great comments here! but it makes me wonder .. ''When are you labeled as a nerd?"

just to use myself:

1) when I was younger I watched the pokemon/DBZ anime AND played outside alot with friends
2) bit later the Gameboy came in my life with pokemon! (lol its still awesome xD) -> pretty much the whole school played it
3) stuff like beyblades and things .....
4) i'm 21 now and i've been actively playing football since i was 4 years old
5) I dont got LOADS of friends but I got good friends and a girlfriend
6) Right now im reading/watching Naruto for 4 years (and i like the Avatar series too)
7) I do go out alot with my friends / i work / play football alot

so am I a nerd ? o_O .... just wondering .. I dont know if it's an unusual life i got xD

I'm not a nerd. Why?
1. I have a really pretty girlfriend
2. I always get invited in parties
3. I know allmost all of the people in the school
4. I wear cool clothes.
5. I accept a challange
6. I never lost in any of the fights.
7. I'm fit.

Cool story bro, needs more dragon and shit.

First of all let start by saying, I'm 29 years, I'm Portuguese, I've a college degree in Politic Science and I'm a realstate Consultant.

After reading 50% of the answers here, I believe most people do not know what a nerd is...

Let me enlightin you, NERD is a expression that was created in Canada in the 50's and meant, Northern Electric Research and Development, and this expression NERD, was given to scientists that work all night long for the Northern Electric Research and Development in Canada.

Now I ask, do you guys work for the Northern Electric Research and Development?????
I dont... So, in this case, I'm not a NERD.

Unfortunately in the 60's the expression was brought to the USA and instantly this word was given a bad connotation, BUT FOR SAME REASON, in the USA being smart is a bad thing, so the expression NERD was given to the smarter kids in school.

Are you the smarter kid in school??? If so, congrats, you will be rich and sucessful in life, while, the "cool" guys in your school, will sell meals in Mcdonalds for you children. Being smart is good.

Now a days the word NERD have sub-categories, and among them, you can be call a NERD if you are; a Geek, a Gamer, a Fandom, a Otaku (fan of manga), or even a Fanboy.

If you have the connotations above in mind, Geek, Gamer, Fandom, Otaku, Fanboy, do you see yourself as a NERD???

Well, I love manga/anime (Otaku), I love Playtation, I have them all, PSX, PSP, PS2 and PS3, all in the multiple forms, fat and slim, and I have over 200 games (Gamer and Fanboy), I love Formula 1 and football (Fanboy).

But above all, I love my wife and kid.

Am I a Nerd???

I'm a good husband a father, and also a Otaku, a old Gamer and Fanboy.

Make your one conclusions, I'm proud of what I've done and accomplished.

So I assume Bill Gates is poor then? o_O No one told me! How did it happen?!
Dont try and be a smartass when you are clearly not even intelligent enough to realize there are exceptions to every stereotype. Are you so repressed that you dont even realize how false your depictions of society are? It sounds like you base your view of society off of Disney movies. And to those who try and act above social classification, congratulations on being a bodhisaattva. Say hi to the Dalai Lama for me. No one is above it. It is such an ingrained part of our society i guarantee most of you do it sub consciously. Its who we are as humans to do this type of thing. That being said i dont look down on those who choose to live their life in a abnormal way. If your a nice person then ill be nice back and that should always stop conflicts from arising.

I love how people are so scared of admitting their a nerd. You all watch Naruto, so most people in society would consider you to be a nerd. You don't have to be unpopular to be a nerd/ geek or whatever you want to call it. I have loads of nerdy interests, but my social skills aren't lacking. Check this out

I guess on second thoughts that would make me a geek, if I go by this diagram.

Orderly and Proper. Few are bound to those words on this site.

I don't see why this would anger people but I've seen people practically have massive heart attacks due to the smallest of comments.

But yes, all of us in our own special way are "Nerds", whether that be a social branding or a personal opinion. xd
^^^^This....for anyone who would get upset by this is just insecure...we as in all people are nerds for something. For exapmle you have football nerds/baseball nerds/basketball nerds/video game nerds...so on and so on. if you have a passion for something and openly show it, there are going to be people who dont get it and think that it is "nerdy", but in all honesty who cares what society labels people. I am not saying that i am or not a nerd all i am is a person who Loves Naruto Manga...thats it.

Nerd, geek... Who says its a bad thing? If im a nerd for liking anime, cartoons, comic books and video games then I AM NERD!! Haha. I'm still a fully functional member of society. It doesn't matter. I'm not gonna pretend to be what someone else thinks i should be.
