I've had an interesting topic for one of my Undergraduate courses at university in the last week; A student who applied to my school a few years back is suing on the grounds that she was white, and didn't have the benefit race plays in the admission of minority students. This has led to the Supreme Court case to be heard this week, Fisher V. Texas. Granted, race is but one of several factors which factored in, and the university has claimed that Fisher wouldn't have been admitted regardless of race. The point of this case, and my thread, is should race have a place in the decision of college admissions? I'll post some articles summarizing the cases of the prosecution and defense, and I would appreciate some honest opinions.

No, I don't think so. What does a college expect from the applicants? Depending on the career some requirements change, but in general terms they want ppl that is outstanding. If some 1 has potential, let it be!!

You know it's funny you bring this topic up. I was disucssing this very same thing with my roommate the other day. I am black and he is white. In my opinion I believe affirmative action should have no bearing in Higher education. I think that compitant academic acheivement and application should be major factors in admissions to any school of higher learning.

Affirmative Action is kind of counter-productive in this respect. We as minorities strive for equality and Affirmative action helped do this in a time when there was none. But let's face it. We have an African American as president now. If we truly want to be treated as equal, then race should not be a factor in these types of decision.

If you can demonstrate you have the academic know-how then you should be admitted on that alone, ethnicity notwithstanding.

I think you should factor in hair color before race, seeing as you can actually do something about hair color and not race. I completely agree with MLK Jr about racial equality and that it shouldn't be a factor for or against us.

That's what I thought; having affirmative action seemed to defeat the point of equal treatment for everyone. This case in particular seemed to be held selfishly to me, but it kind of needs to happen, one way or another. Still, some good points were brought up for it. One, there is a more thorough learning environment if there are many people from distinct cultural backgrounds on a college campus, and two, the population of many state colleges have largely under-represented minority populations. I still believe that meritocracy should be all that counts, but still, the debate is more complicated than I had originally thought it was.

i found out there is something like a anti-affirmative action in Harvard. Asian students have to score higher than the average asian score to get into harvard because if they didn't Harvard would be 50% asian lol.

Haha, all of the universities usually set specific quotas on themselves to limit the amount of one ethnicity they take in, to promote diversity. I kinda think it's really sad, but I can see a few benefits.

It's stupid to set quotas for each ethnicity. People shouldn't be rejected from universities because of their race. This doesn't help equality in any way.

Those lazy ****ing niggers need to stop expecting government handouts and get into school like the rest of us... with hard work! I can't count how many times I've been stuck in a class with some lazy, black, ****er who doesn't understand the basics of the English language.

No. I don't allow this on my thread. Not even funny. - rep and reported.

And to address the actual points above, to be honest, let's be blunt about what they're trying to do; white reparation. It's true. They literally think that their are too many white people in schools. That's the reason universities pull this crap. We made the other sides suffer and do with less for so long that it's payback time. It was only about "being fair" for so long. That's a pure blooded lie now.

She should blame her ancestors for buying blacks enslaving them and suppressing them for hundreds of years, only becoming recognized as human beings 50 years ago,

Reparation is in no way just. Remember, the civil rights movements were for equality, not reverse racism. "Eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind".

Why should race matter? I'm not white but believe that if you have the brains and the potential, then whoever gets in the University first. SHOULD take the place, why reserve paces for anyone?
To me what 'matters' is your rank class, SAT scores, GPA, essays etc.. not if you're White, Black, Native american, Asian or Mexican american.

You can be an alien for all I care, as long as you have the grades, you should have the spot.

I scanned through the post and I know whom you're speaking of. Saw it in the news, I live in Texas after all.

Carefull with your choice of words. So if reparation is in no way just why is Israel a topten military power tht received billions in foreign aid from countries around the world in which the crime did not happen. Whey where they granted their land at all. Because according to you reparations are in no way just

I'm sorry am I defending Israel? No. And that wasn't reparation, the western European powers thought they were fixing a problem. They didn't want anyone like Hitler appearing with crazy ideals in their part of the world again, so they sent the Jews to a place where they pretty much already controlled everything and displaced the Palestinians. That actually had very little to do with reparation. It shut the Jews up with their demands for a country and removed them from Europe. Two birds with one stone.

You continually say "you". "I" did nothing. I am 19. I wasn't alive when this happened. And I'm not talking about Israel. That's not the point of my thread. Get on topic or leave.

I am 19 as well and I am here to argue the opposite viewpoint you have presented. You say reparations are wrong, than you say " shut the Jews up for a demand" and "killed two birds with one stone" in another, clearly you are in favor of this reparation, though you think it is wrong. Explain ur logic

1. The point of this thread was involving affirmative action in higher education, not reparation, which as I have stated easily, is wrong.
2. I have stated not my own opinions, but the historical facts. This is what European nations did following WWII. This does not include my personal beliefs at all.
3. I have not once stated my own beliefs on Israel. You are making faulty assumptions so foolish that it hurts. You can't compare my views to the historical fact.
4. I believe the West has no place in the Israel V. Palestine argument, and therefore you're trying to shout down someone you barely even read the words of.

There. Is that off topic blurb enough for you?
