Here is some information about Itachi that makes him really stand out as a true shinobi and a genius.
Now, I'm not saying that he is the only shinobi in the manga that is a genius, but I'm saying that he is one of the very best.
1. Itachi has always been a very intelligent shinobi. As Hiruzen said, he could think on the level of a Hikage when he was only seven years of age! Not a single one of the other characters could do that, I'm sure of it! He also graduated from the academy at a very early age, he only spent one year there. Then he quickly rose through the ranks and eventually became a captain in the Anbu at just 13 years of age!
2. Itachi always looked at the bigger picture. He didn't limit his thinking to only his clan. He broadened his horizon to think of all the shinobi in NV. That is truly a great feat and it shows how much he cared about others.
3. Itachi carried a huge burden on him when he was only a teenager. This means that he was very mature and was trusted by the elders. He had a lot of patience. Can you imagine what state of mind he would have been in when he was told to kill his clan? If it were another character, they would have totally broken down. This shows that even though he was put in this situation, he was able to carry out what he had to do calmly. He had to cast away his emotions for the better of the Shinobi world.
4. Itachi had the ability to think ahead of time. He preffered to avoid battle, but when he did fight, he tried to make it as quick as possible. During a fight, Itachi always kept a clear mind and could analyze his opponents very well. He also predicted what Sasuke would do in the future and made arrangements for it.
5. +16Itachi wore the facade of an S-ranked criminal so he could protect his village & the life of his younger brother. He didn't need to show or prove to the world how much of a hero he was like Naruto. Itachi opted to die as a man whom his brother and the rest of the world hated in order to save the brother and the world he loved. Not a truer Shinobi in the entire Naruto series.
6. Itachi was very loyal to Konoha and he was never arrogant. Even though Konoha had its dark side, Itachi still considered himself as a Konoha Shinobi. And he was not arrogant at all. Even though he knew that he was much stronger than the opponents he faced, he was very humble and would also praise his opponents skills. This shows that he was very mature and a great person.
7. He has a very kind personality. When Sasuke was a child, he was always shown to be having a gentle and compassionate look in his eyes. He loved Sasuke a lot, even though he followed the path that Itachi did not desire. Itachi also died with a smile on his face.
8. His fighting style was awesome. He could beat very strong shinobi and Kakashi couldn't even defeat him. All his Jutsus were pretty good. He awakened his MS at a very young age too. Itachi was considered to be a genius at battle, even by the standards of the battle adept Uchiha clan. His father was also very proud of him. Itachi also had a very powerful Tsukuyomi.
To sum up, Itachi was a true Shinobi and was quite a genius. He had many great qualities and he is a pretty good role model through his behaviour and personality. He was very intelligent, strong, kind, gentle, humble and loyal. Of course, these are not his only qualities, he has many more great qualities, but there are too much to list here!
