Did Hashirama show Madara mercy?

So according to what Tobi told Sasuke among other mini flashbacks it was stated that Madara, strongest of the Uchiha fought Hashirama, strongest of the Senju on more then one occasion before Konoha was founded..

So since Hashirama has been hyped to be the absolute dominant Ninja of his time and still is so legendary to be considered "fairy tale" like So6P..why did it take him so long to "kill" Madara? I mean this is a man who had the most powerful Bloodline known thus far, being Mokoton..and having the ability to capture multiple Bijuu and hand them out to other nations as gifts..not to mention even years down the road to still be considered the strongest ninja to ever live (I say Ninja..not Sage..lol)

We don't know much about the battles between the two before VoTE and we really don't know a whole lot about VoTE battle either..but why did it take so many battles between the two to decide an outcome if Hashirama was the top dog period?

I believe Hashirama was more like Naruto in personality.. he had some kind of respect for Madara, similar to Naruto/Sasuke and didn't want to end his life for unknown reasons, I doubt they were ever friends..but maybe it was more of a rivalry friendship..and Hashirama felt that he needed Madara to have a purpose(before Konoha)

But when Madara threatened Konoha (VoTE) Hashirama had to choose between his long rivals life or the life of the village and obviously choose the village

Now fast forward to Edo Madara, he shows a deep respect of Hashirama...even though he said he hated that man he cannot deny that there is huge respect for him


So do you guys think that Hashirama had let Madara live in the clashes pre-Konoha for his own benefits, needing Madara to exist for himself to have purpose? They obviously have some kind of love/hate relationship but I can't see why it took so long to decide an outcome..in all the battles before VoTE it was Madara vs Hashirama, but at VoTE it was Kyuubi+Madara vs Hashirama..I imagine that battle was much harder then the previous ones...so why did Hashirama take so long to "kill" Madara?

no they were equal in a similar way to naruto and sasuke but hashirama just won the last fight between them. i am sure madara has beaten hashirama also on a few occasions also.

No I think Hashirama acknowledged Madara, and he respected Hashirama, they both were almost equal, just like the older and younger brothers, their ancestors, but Hashirama was slightly stronger, just like the younger brother, the Senju ancestor.

Yes but what about the battles before the village? The village was founded when Senju and Uchiha called for peace, so all the battles before that..there was no village..

I feel Hashirama needed Madara to exist because if Madara had lost in the pre-village fights the Uchiha would of been in big trouble considering how powerful Madara was compared to the rest

We know that Hashirama was under the impression Madara was dead after VoTE..everyone thought Madara was dead..but you could be on to something..Hashirama might of known Madara wasn't dead and told him to leave and never return or something..I just feel Hashirama never had the killing intent toward Madara, like Naruto doesn't want to kill Sasuke..though its not because of previous friendship..its out of respect for Madara

We know that..but that was VoTE fight..they fought quite a few times before Konoha was even founded..and I doubt Madara knew about the Rinnegan before the Village..as Tobi said "When one Nation hired the Senju..the opposing Nation hired the Uchiha" so Madara and Hashirama had battled a number of times before Konoha was founded..my question is why did Hashirama not end it along time ago..if he had killed Madara way back then the Uchiha would of been weakened quite a bit considering Madara was the only one with EMS and had the most powerful chakra among the Uchiha..that how he became the leader of the clan

Hashirama doesn't seem to be the malicious type, in fact he seemed to care about every Nation's people..I think he knew that if Madara died before Konoha was founded the Uchiha would of been targeted by other clans because Madara was gone

Hashirama gave Bijuu around to other Nations to "balance power", but in reality I think Hashirama did this because if he didn't..Konoha could of just stomped all over the other Nations and Hashirama didn't want that..

I also think this is a similar reason to why he didn't kill Madara in one of the many battles before Konoha, because if he had killed Madara there would of been nothing standing in the way of other clans running all over the Uchiha

They have the same rivalry as Naruto and Sasuke in every way although they weren't friends from childhood like N+S i still think it would of been very similiar i actually agree theres a good chance Hashirama spared him or Madara faked his death

I think people are misunderstanding what I am trying to say

I am saying: All the battles before VoTE..why did Madara live? In all the other battles it was Madara vs Hashirama..in VoTE it was Kyuubi+Madara vs Hashirama..obviously VOTE had to be the hardest for Hashirama to win..so how come he didn't kill Madara in one of the battles before that?

Because he knew that if Madara had died when there was no villages, only clans..the other clans would of targeted the Uchiha once Madara was gone..and over time Hashirama came to respect Madara for his persistence and power..and never wanted to end his life..but was forced to at VOTE (or so he thought) because Madara was threatening the Village
