Well lets think about this rationally. Hashirama suppressed the 9-tails, it was sealed into Mito and is no longer a factor. Hashi is perfect for sealing tailed beasts. Madara only had the EMS, and hasn't been shown to be all that smart, more brawn then brains.

Nagato can absorb any chakra based attack. He can levitate, he can destroy an entire village in one move, he can repel things with gravity, or more importantly bring something to him. He can steal souls, turn his skin into metals and grow weird robot weapons out of his body, he can summon a seemingly endless number of summons, he can bring people back to life, etc.

And that isn't even counting all of the normal abilities he has that are non-rinnegan related, because remember he was training with Jiraiya before he awakened his rinnegan for real. (He did it once to avenge his parents but it didn't stay on for some reason.)

It's specifically stated that Hashirama can control tailed beasts. Suppressing their chakra isn't controlling them considering Sasuke can also suppress the kyuubi's chakra, which means Hashirama controlled them by unknown means.

Yes Mito was a good candidate but again you are missing the point, if you had a fool-proof way of controlling a tailed beast, why would you risk a jinchurikki which could lose control and kill people? It makes no sense. Hopefully you see that.

So just because it hasn't been shown means it's not true? By that logic Tobirama can't use edo tensei because he's never been shown using it, Tobi can't use rinnegan techniques since he's never been seen using them, and Naruto can't summon Gamaken because he hasn't been shown summoning it. :| Your logic needs to be checked. I also never stated he controlled them through the power of wood. I said maybe he controls them by unknown means.

hari gave villages some tail beast to divide powers therefore he could control them, and besides like tobi said, so6p had 2 sons, one that given his eyes and the other strength and willpower. The senju was giving the strength and willpower which was why they matched the uchiha. If the so6p could control the beast and passed on his legacy to his younger son the senju than it only goes to show why the 1st could and the uchiha. That's why both could do it. Like sasuke when he suppressed the nine tailed that time( not saying he can control it)

Hashirama had an advantage against Madara because he could take control of the nine tails with the help of his wife, which is why he won the legendary battle. Against Nagato he has no such advantage and we don't know the full extent of his powers, so I say Nagato.
