Video of ignored dying toddler shocks China

I can't believe alot of people ddnt step in to help a baby girl. But this is a perfect example of "diffuse responsiblity" when a group of people choose to do nothing during an emergency. Everybody is waiting for the next person to step up and take the responsibility of helping but it results in nobody stepping up because everybody is waiting for someone else.

And this just doesn't happen in china it happens everywhere. There was an incident in NY awhile back where a lady was beaten stabbed/shot multiple times and raped twice in the streets and there were around 30 witnesses. The attack took about 3 or so hours and nobody responded early enough to save the woman.

yea man but thats just human nature. in anywhere in the world this is the most likely thing to have happened. but there are exceptions of people who go out of there way to help. someone did finally help that lil girl. but it was too late.

This is unbelievable, I don't even know what to think. I mean can someone be so cruel that they just run over a child, realize what they have done then run over the child again? I mean what the ****. The people who passed by are stupid, the girl was bleeding out on the streets and all they had to do was call for help and their job would have been done. And as for the second people who ran over her pay attention to what you are doing and don't be so ****ing stupid. This entire video makes me sick.

If you're around a group of people when something happens, and you don't see anyone else helping, you're far less likely to help yourself. Its something about being the first one to do something that the human psyche is reluctant to do. So the longer nobody helps, the less chance anyone is going to help.

So while it may seem sickening that nobody stopped to help, its an explainable behavior. However, the first van who apparently ran the child over on purpose and even the second van that ran over the child as well are just sick individuals.

The murdered woman's name was Kitty Genovese, here's the wiki page about the murder:

These two events are quite different.This little girl is in the middle of the street, right in the faces of the people passing her by.They all had to see her there bleeding, hear her moan in pain, even step over her without the slightest bit on conscience to help her.There are numerous account of what really happen with the Kitty Genovese.Some people say they didn't see or hear her.Remember, these people were in their homes.So just by that alone the situation are very different.When you are so close to someone hurt that you can touch them, the lack of doing something is far more heartless than just hearing a scream from outside.

Chinese authorities have supposedly have caught the first driver (the second is no worse in my opinion). "If she is dead, I may pay only about 20,000 yuan ($3,125). But if she is injured, it may cost me hundreds of thousands yuan," said the driver over the phone to the media, before he gave himself up to the police.

The girl has been pronounced "brain dead" by doctors and remains on life support in intensive care.

"She couldn't breathe on her own," said Wen Qiang, deputy director of the ICU department.

The most optimistic estimate is that the girl will remain in a vegetative state on life support.

Police have detained both drivers.

Unconfirmed reports that the toddler died on 16 / 10 / 2011:
"...doctors said the girl died yesterday from severe brain injuries she had suffered in the accident."

They weren't just hearing the screams, some of them watched it happen over a 30 minute period from their windows. And its not the only case of a similar thing happening in the US.
