He did. Then hashirama took control of the fox
Dude he couldn't control the fox, his mokuton just suppresses chakra making it easier to capture and seal the fox. That is why he sealed it into his wife. If he could control tailed beasts that way then why would he ever seal a bijuu into anyone?

All logic and reasoning point away from that, when Danzo said that he was probably speaking in hyperbole. Characters in Naruto often speak in hyperbole, exaggerating things all the time.

In his prime, Hiruzen could have went toe to toe, and probably won against any ninja in Naruto's history. In terms of vs Minato and his FTG, I dunno. Hiruzen had the intelligence of Kakashi, the chakra of Naruto, the fighting ability of Raikage and lets not forget his summon Emna.

Iruka stated him to be the strongest Hokage in the village's history(in his prime), and that's including Minato.
Totaly agree

What does iruka know? Seriously? Kishi talks through his characters and he made it clear that hiruzen was considered the strongest kage in his prime(databooks, interviews, manga).
"Uhh, we have not seen much from him so we are going to conclude kishi is lying".The guy who fought orochimaro(arguably not only the strongest sannin, but also one of the strongest shinobis) and the two first hokages was 68 years old.Oro said that he would have been defeated if he was 10years younger. And kishi made it clear that he was nowhere near his former pride/strenght, via the commentary by enma, anbu, and orochimaru.

Some of you guys are so deluded that you bring up strong tecniques from other strong guys, when we haven't seen sarutobi in his prime.Hiruzen was called God of shinobi, because he knew every jutsu in the book(at least in konoha). So, you don't think he had a counter for pretty much everything? Itachi himself said that every jutsu has a weakness,so aren't the odds with a guy, who is known as the professor(read up on any power) and who could actually back his wisdom/genious up with his offense.Imagine a guy like shikimaru with naturo's power and chakra?

Finally, if hiruzen was surpassed why the hell didn't anybody else step up and become hokage after minato(who is also great and is tied according to interviews).

btw, you could make a case for the first three hokages, but you would have to be delusional to underrate any of them. People use to say that the guys who lived in sarutobi's time must have been weak, simply because we hadn't heard about them.Well what now?

Go look hishirama and madara's fight up. He was known for "controlling" tailed beast. I'm done. Go look the fight up.

They were holding lots of things back ...

1) He only used 1 tree attack and a Genjutsu (in Manga, in Anime Tobirama used the Genjutsu) ... But When he was alive, he made Bijuus his bitches and beat Madara with EMS + KYUUBI ...

2) Tobirama didn't use his S/T Jutsu, his own Edo Tensei, or that lightning sword he had in real life ... and in the fight he used only 2 or 3 jutsus ...

They were holding back ... + because they didn't have mind of thier own, they didn't think strategically, and just charged in like naruto.
its true that he couldnt have taken them all if the 1st and 2nd had a mind of their own but the third is the strongest hokage individually out of all of them. i would take third in his prime against any of the hokage and he would have definitely won. he almost killed orochimaru at the agee of 72. he even stated himself that he had nowhere near the amount of chakra reserves that he had in his 1st stint as hokage.

And if you want to go off feats minato wins easily. You say hiruzen wins but your wrong. Minato has the best resume ever besides the sage and hishirama. Minato fought madara and the nine tails by his self. And he won. Not only that but he came up with a plan for 16 years ahead within minutes. It doesn't get better than that. I have yet to hear a kage praise hiruzen but all we hear are kage still praising minato.
he wasnt even in the story for that long and by that time he was already 72 years old. he was able to permanetly scar a SANNIN. he had stated himself that his chakra reserves had greatly deplenished since his youth.in a flashback he could have killed orochimaru with ease because of his experimentations on other leaf ninja but chose to let him live. i doubt minato would have even posed a threat that age. his trump card is speed and by that time it would've greatly decreased. in narutopedia it stated that hiruzen was a MASTER of genjutsu, ninjutsu, and taijutsu.

Quote from narutopedia,"Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage, was said to be the strongest Hokage in the village's history, as well as strongest of the Five Kage of his era." HAHA:p

Me personally think that he was the only known Hokage to know every jutsu in the book. But as far as being the strongest Hokage, I highly doupt it. It might be true that he is stronger than both of his teachers, the two previous Hokages. But being stronger than Minato, its very debatable. I still have not yet seen a technique or jutsu by Hiruzen that is able to counter Minato's teleportation technique. After all, Hiruzen learned the strongest if not one of the strongest jutsu's in the Naruto Series which is the "Dead Demon Consuming Seal" from Minato. He is also shown to be have more knowledge of
Fuinjutsu than "the profesor" himself. My point is simple. Hiruzen Sarutobi is known to be the strongest of his time, but as far as being stronger than Minato, I don't think so.
