why to ppl think genjutsu can kill you? there is no genjutsu that can kill you! it merely targets you nervous system and one of the 5 senses. it is made to stun/confuse/immobilize/and make you collapse. after the genjutsu or during the genjutsu the user then makes the move for the kill. (visual/sharingan) but against a 2+ man cell fight, genjutsu is irrelevant because the partners would release the spell. against tsukiomi, the parter would protect the collapsed one, and wake them up/snap them out. plus the eft one tsukiomi has on the user is quite high (unless your sasuke with out of no where power ups!)
(sound) is said by shikamaru to be the best out of all the 5 senses genjutsu! the reason is it could target multiple enemies instead of one. and take it from there. these two are the main ones being used in the show so i want bring up the other senses since there is nothing to support them.
overall, even the tsukiomi cant kill some one. but is merely used to help go for the win. some one like killer bee would be protected from any tsukiomi, why? because not only does he have the 8tails to protect from all damage (octo arms and other things) and snap him out (since its 2 minds in one body. bee also has samehada who also has a separate mind that protects from all damage, pump bee with chakra to wake him up, and also heal all damage down to bee.
so please stop saying one tsukiomi wins a fight when it is a fact that it doesn't, it can lead to the victory tho. bee>>itachi any day all day!
feel free to argue, i have a lil free time.
Great, another one of these...Here's why Genjutsu can indeed kill you.
First of all, Genjutsu affect the brain, which in turn affects everything else in the body, via one of the five senses, Touch, Sound, Smell, Taste, and Sight.
Recently, we've been shown that Ocular (sight) Genjutsu are immensely powerful - such as Tsukuyomi - most likely because of the fact that they don't work past a certain range, due to needing eye contact.
Sound Genjutsu are said to be the most dangerous, due to the fact that they have such a long reach, and can capture multiple opponents in a single use. They would, arguably, also be the most difficult to keep yourself from falling into.
However, people constantly overlook the fact that there is
another way to capture someone in a Genjutsu: proximity.
Case and point:

. This Genjutsu caught multiple people at one time in it, and there is no refuting that, and here's an interesting thought - it can't be Ocular, as one person cannot make eye contact with that many people simultaneously; its highly unlikely to be taste or smell, as we've seen no Genjutsu that utilize those senses, as well as no one even mentioned a strange smell or taste; it wasn't activated by touch, and this should be fairly obvious; this leaves only Sound, but even that's highly unlikely, as no one actually heard anything - the feathers just started falling.
THEORY SECTION AHEAD: Genjutsu like this most likely work by the caster dispersing their chakra into the air. When the air is filled with their chakra, it simply diffuses into their target, effecting their chakra system, and thus capturing them in the Genjutsu. However, the range of these Genjutsu would be proportional to the amount of chakra output, thus making them activated by Proximity, not one of the five sense.
END THEORY SECTION.
Now, as stated earlier, Genjutsu effect the brain, which governs the entire body. If something happens to your brain, it's not good for your body. Genjutsu, most of the time, cause varying levels of mental stress, which we know affects the body; i.e. how someone who is under a lot of mental pressure (think finals, or work related stress) tends to lack physically, due to mental exhaustion.
Genjutsu take this concept to a higher level. For the most part, what you see in these illusions may as well be real - you feel the pain that the illusion causes you, even though you're taking no physical damage.
Theoretically, if Genjutsu where used over and over, the mental stress would start to mount upon the captured, and their brain would start to fail, or fall into a comatose state, due to trying to protect itself. Once the brain goes, there goes the rest of the body.
Again, theoretically, you could cause enough mental damage to the brain that it just ceases bodily functions, and so you would stop breathing, your heart would stop pumping, etc, thus meaning that a Genjutsu can kill you.
Furthermore, you have the natural "flight-or-fight" response coming in, helping the Genjutsu along. As the body comes into certain situations, it floods the body with adrenaline, and the heart starts pumping faster and harder, to get oxygen to the extremities. This is not a state your body can stay in for prolonged periods of time, as it is actually very damaging - the "higher-than-average" strength/speed, etc that comes with it is very damaging to your muscles, your heart included.
If a Genjutsu caused enough fear, your heart may flutter due to overclocking itself, and thus you'll have a heart attack.
For the simple fact that they effect the brain, Genjutsu theoretically have more killing potential than almost any other type of jutsu. So, just because they haven't been shown to be fatal, doesn't mean they are not.
I seriously doubt - for arguments sake - that if a normal person like you or I were hit by something of the caliber of Tsukiyomi that we would live to tell the tale, especially when Itachi said that he was impressed that Kakashi had even survived his torture.
