A ninja is part of the military power from a hidden village. In times of peace he/she does missions in squads for his/her village. This can be for the villages sake or because someone requested help. People can ask help in the form of bodyguards or in the form of finding back lost animals or gardening.

But you could also define a ninja as a person who protects his ideals and things close to him with ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu or all three.

Haha, yeah sorry for being so slow Zenryoku-sensei.
You can make chakra by mixing physical energy with spiritual energy. To accomplish chakra for their techniques they have to make the handseals and control the amount of chakra they make.
