Itachi was in the possession of two spiritual items. These of course were the sword of totsuka and the yata mirror. The Sword of Totsuka was the sword used by Itachi's version of Susanoo which was able to place whoever it cut into an eternal drunken slumber. The Yata Mirror was the shield Susanoo carried and was capable of deflecting any attack. The pairing quite literally made Itachi invincible.

These two items however, are part of a threesome. The one item that we haven't seen yet is the Yasakani no Magatama. Or at least it hasn't been revealed that we've seen it. I think though, that we have in fact seen this spiritual item. Magatama are curved beads that hang on necklaces, this is what the Sage of the Six Path's necklace is made of.

This brings us to Naruto's new transformation. When accessing the Kyuubi's chakra Naruto has a unique transformation. Unlike the transformations we've seen previously with the Shukaku, Nibi and Hachibi, Naruto does not take on the appearance of his tailed beast. Instead he gains a bright blue cloak in the form of the Sage of the Six Paths. He also gains what looks like the sage's necklace. I believe that this necklace shown on Naruto is in actuality, the Yasakani no Magatama that was given to him by Itachi.

The Yasakani no Magatama represents benevolance, the exact opposite of what the tailed beasts represent. I think the Sage of the Six Paths was the first person to possess this spiritual item and it was what allowed him to conquer the Juubi. Now in Naruto, it reacts with the Kyuubi's chakra and gives Naruto this new transformation. This also explains why Naruto can sense evil intentions. The necklace which represents goodness, gives the person the ability to sense evil.

wow, this is the first good theory I read about itachi's gift, I think this might be very plausible

I only have one little remark about it, itachi said that he hoped the day would never come that naruto would need what he had been given, making me think it would be something that would react to sasuke's presence or his chakra, or perhaps it's a part of itachi's chakra sealed inside naruto to help out during his sasuke fight (like minato and kushina did to help out against the fox) like help him overcome sasuke's genjutsu.

but still, I do like this theory of yours, it would make sence that itachi had the third item aswel. nice job and good research

nice, makes absolutely sense. but why do you think that there are three items and that the last is called Yasakani no Magatama? Have you any source where the three belong to?

Nice theory but what about the sword and the shield that were in posetion of Itachi. Does Sasuke have them now that he has combined his brother's eyes with his own. Does that mean that he will be super powerfull while using Susanoo?

very possible. that would make itachi a genius for possessing these 3 legendary items. dragon lord already came up with this theory though :)

I like your theory, but i think he might have given the other 2 items his possesed. After all, we know Sasuke's gonna be uber strong when he comes back, right? So it makes sense to give Naruto something to protect himself/stop Sasuke. The shield to protect himself and the sword to stop Sasuke without killing him. That makes a lil more sense to me. Itachi would dread having Sasuke locked away in a eternal sleep. The necklace on ther other hand could have simply come as a reward for gaining control over the fox.

Either way. very well thought out theory. Nice research. Glad to see someone using their brain around here.

You got me to thinking so i did a lil more research...These are said to be spirituals itams with no real form right? Maybe your spiritual energy is what allows you to gain access to these items.

In reading the legend, I find out that the warrior (Itachi in this case) who killed the eight-headed snake(orochmaru.) found a sword in the snake's body. That sword was handed down to a warrior (naruto?). Later that warrior found himself in battle with a warlord who used with firey arrows (Sasuke's Susanno?) to surround on he battle field. The warrior used the sword to cut down the grass that fed the fire, and in doing so he realized the sword allowed him to control the wind (Seriously?). He used the winds controlled by the sword to beat the warlord.

NOw the only question would be how does Naruto get it after the death of Itachi? Itachi had planned on dying so did he give him the gift of access before hand?

The history of this sword extends into legend and it is one of the theory of how the sword came into being. The Japanese god, Susanoo encountered a grieving family headed by Ashi-Na-Zuchi in Izumo province. Upon inquiry, the elder told that his family was ravaged by the fearsome 8-headed serpent of Koshi who consumed seven of the family's eight daughters and the creature was coming for his final daughter, Kushi-Nada-Hime. Susanoo proceeded forward to investigate the creature, and after an abortive encounter he returned with a plan to defeat it. In return, he asked for Kushi-Nada-Hime's hand in marriage which was agreed. Transforming her temporarily into a comb to have her company during the battle, he detailed his plan.

He instructed the preparation of 8 vats of sake (rice wine) to be put on individual platforms positioned behind a fence with 8 gates. The monster took the bait and put each of its heads through each of the gates. With the necessary distraction provided, Susanoo attacked and slew the beast. He decapitated each of the heads and then proceeded to the tails. In the fourth tail, he discovered a great sword inside the body of the dragon which he called Murakumo-No-Tsurugi (lit. Sword of the heaven of the clustering clouds) which he presented to the goddess, Amaterasu to settle an old grievance.

Generations later in the reign of the 12th emperor, Keiko, the sword was given to the great warrior, Yamato-Takeru as part of a pair of gifts given by his aunt, Yamato-Hime the Shrine Maiden of Ise, to protect her nephew in times of peril.

These gifts came in handy when Yamato-Takeru was lured onto an open grassland during a hunting expedition by a treacherous warlord. The lord had fiery arrows fired to ignite the grass to trap Yamato-Takeru in the field and have him burn to death and killed the warrior's horse to prevent his escape. Desperately, Yamato-Takeru used Murakakumo-No-Tsurugi to cut back the grass to remove fuel from the fire, but in doing so, he discovered that the sword enabled him to control the wind around to make it move in the direction he swung. Taking advantage of the magic, Yamato-Takeru used his other gift, fire strikers, to enlarge the fire in the direction of the lord and his men and used the winds controlled by the sword to sweep the blaze toward them to kill them. In triumph, Yamato-Takeru renamed Murakumo-No-Tsurugi as Kusanagi (Grasscutter) to commemorate his narrow escape and victory.

Eventually, Yamato-Takeru married and fell in battle with a monster after ignoring his wife's advice to take Kusanagi with him. While this is the most popular theory of Kusanagi's name, researchers agree that this is most likely false. In the ancient Japanese language, kusa meant sword' and nagi meant snake. Kusanagi therefore meant sword of snake.
