Animal Path makes the first move, pretty much as usual since his summons can handle most tough opponents instead of having to get any ‘paths’ physically involved on the battlefield. He starts by summoning his three-headed dog known as Hell Hound. Itachi is unimpressed and charges at Animal Path, but Hell Hound does not intend to let him reach its master. It lunges at Itachi and whilst doing so, its two additional heads separate from its body in order to also lunge at the opponent. However, Itachi graciously dodges all the three dogs and proceeds towards the Animal Path in a matter of milliseconds. With his opponent being so unexpectedly fast on him, Animal Path cannot see the next attack coming. This is what Itachi had intended to make happen and upon reaching Animal Path, he draws out a sword from under his Akatsuki coat in order to stab Animal Path. But unexpectedly, Animal Path succeeds to dodge his sword in a spin and without even looking at it. Whilst Itachi temporarily loses his balance in the vain attack and being still too surprised to regain his posture, Animal Path connects an elbow kick to his spin and knocks down his opponent. As Animal Path waves his other arm for the next attack, all the other ‘paths’ and the three Hell Hound watch closely the defeat of the Uchiha genius. As the fatal attack comes near to execution, Itachi’s lying body explodes, much to the surprise of all who were watching. Almost simultaneously, red flames crash on the three Hell Hound and make them disappear. As the ‘paths’ look in the direction from which the second attack originated, they now see another Itachi and determine that the previous Itachi was only a bunshin bakuha. With the smoke dissipated, it can now be seen that Animal Path’s body has been badly severed and is not fit for combat anymore. Itachi is now set on Deva Path, the leader of the Akatsuki and presumably the leader of the five other rinnegan bearers, since this may prove to shorten or cease the fight.
Next ‘path’ to line up for combat is Asura Path. As Itachi and him charge towards each other, they quickly turn the battlefield into a ruin by opposing one’s missiles against the other one’s phoenix immortal fire. When they finally come in range for physical controntation, Itachi’s opponent turns out to be a four-armed humanoid possessing remarkable strength that must be dealt with utmost precaution. Moreover, Human Path and Preta Path have joined the fight. Knowing nothing of his opponent except that rinnegan was very powerful, Itachi had intended to use only jutsus not requiring his mangekyou sharingan. However, he is being bested in taijutsu by his three opponents and cannot yet figure out how they are able to predict his every movements. He is cornered and left with no choice. Fortunately, or rather unfortunately, his three opponents retreats right before he activates his mangekyou sharingan and enable him to save it for some more time. Their retreat is followed by egg-like objects falling from the sky. These begin to shine, alerting Itachi that they may be explosive. It turns out to be true and Itachi succeeds to avoid the explosion thanks to his correct assumption. Looking up, he finds the summoned bird named Hard Beak lunging directly at him this time since there are none of his allies around. Itachi manages to dodge and now realizes that Animal Path is back on his feet and in complete fighting condition. Naraka Path stands next to him, suggesting that he has something to do with his regeneration. The other three ‘paths’ have returned to their original position next to Deva Path. Although the result so far is disappointing, Itachi feels that all his efforts have paid off since he can now ascertain some things about his opponents. First one is that, through his hand-to-hand confrontation with the ‘paths’, he was able to feel the blacks rods channeling chakra and knows that Deva Path is just another puppet and not the real Pain. However, he needs to finish off all the ‘paths’ before facing the real guy since the latter could prove to be a handful. So it would be best that there is no ‘paths’ to interfere when that time comes. Second thing is that, on some instances since the beginning of the fight, the ‘paths’ have demonstrated remarkable reaction skills. This could be accounted by the fact that they are all rinnegan bearers and could be sharing a common vision. With these useful informations, Itachi can now devise a better strategy to deal with Pain and his ‘paths’.
Hard Beak charges once more but Itachi has prepared for it. Nearing contact, Itachi jumps at it and sets one foot on its beak, using that as support to throw himself back onto the bird’s body. He then takes out a sword that is similar to the one that his bunshin bakuha used, and stabs it into the bird’s back. Setting one foot on the sword, he again uses that as support but this time, he throws himself away from the bird’s back whilst the sword is thrusted into the bird’s heart like a bullet and ends its course on the ground beneath its victim. As Itachi lands with one knee to the ground, Hard Beak crashes at full speed behind him and disappears in a puff of smoke. Hard Beak and Itachi having taken the fight some distance away from the ‘paths’, a swarm of missiles is the only immediate action that the ‘paths’ can provide in order to catch the opponent off-guard upon his landing. However, Itachi is quick on the move and paths his way through the swarm of missiles. Once the distance between him and the ‘paths’ has been closed considerably, he launches a great fireball to engulf all missiles flying at him and make them explode simultaneously. With the proximity and power of the explosion, a screen of dirt masks the battlefield. Sensing the danger of this being a possible maneuver, the ‘paths’ retreat some meters back as they cannot see through the dirt. But, much to their misfortune, their predilection is correct. Itachi quickly and stealthily appears behind Naraka Path who realizes what the blurry shadow that crossed him was. Itachi had activated his mangekyou sharingan and now casts his amaterasu flames on Naraka Path. The second after, black rods stabs through Itachi’s body. These have been sent by Animal Path who was closer to Naraka Path and had come to protect his teammate. Though too late, he has succeeded to beat Itachi. Preta Path is next to arrive and absorbs the amaterasu flames, saving Naraka Path’s body from complete incineration although it has been rendered useless. When the stabbed Itachi disappear in a puff of smoke, both Animal Path and Preta Path are disconcerted when they learn this was only a shadow clone. On the other end of the battlefield, information about Itachi’s tactic is immediately received by the other ‘paths’. Asura Path, Human Path and Deva Path accordingly look at each other in a triangular motion way. As an Itachi figure appears behind Deva Path, this one therefore readily uses his shinra tensei to dispel the amaterasu flames casted at him. Itachi, which they ‘paths’ cannot yet ascertain to be the real guy, retreats some meters back after this failed attack. The screen of dirt dissipates and Itachi now faces only five ‘paths’.
Deva Path calls for a battle formation. Lining up, Deva Path sets himself at the far rear, with Preta Path in the centre and the rest of the ‘paths’ grouping themselves on the frontline. Itachi is irritated since this could lengthen the combat and consequently, the use of his mangekyou sharingan. However, he keeps his composure to avoid the ‘paths’ discovering his weak points. Pretty much as before, when fighting collectively the ‘paths’ use only taijutsu, much to Itachi’s expectations. With mangekyou sharingan activated, Itachi is much more able to keep up against three ‘paths’ in close combat. Dashing all over the battlefield, Itachi succeeds to summon his crows in-between the restless assaults of his opponents. With a massive flock of crows now surrounding Itachi and his three immediate opponents, Deva Path and Preta Path are unable to watch the fight anymore. Even within the flock of crows, the three ‘paths’ there have lost sight of Itachi who faded into the black mass. As they attempt to retreat out of the crows’ formation, Human Path is captured within the ephemeral jutsu when he looks at a crow shapeshifting into Itachi’s hands. Other crows have shapeshifted into shurikens and launched of the other two opponents. Asura Path has successfully shielded himself with his four arms, however Animal Path has had his left eye blinded by an incoming shuriken. With most of the ‘paths’ safely outside the flock of crows, Deva Path enters it and generates a mighty shinra tensei which kills most of the crows. With the imminent defeat of Human Path once he had been caught in Itachi’s ephemeral jutsu, Deva Path had thought that he would be the proper bait to capture Itachi in his shinra tensei, making the loss of Human Path more meaningful. However, Human Path now lies incapacitated on the battlefield whilst Itachi has escaped defeat by a close margin, making the sacrifice useless. Itachi is seen being propulsed away and trying to regain a firm posture on the ground in order to end his frenetic course. Once he achieves this, he immediately charges at Deva Path who is finally in the front line and easily attainable. Reacting quickly though, Preta Path also comes in front and switch position with Deva Path in order to absorb the casted amaterasu flames. Asura Path also sends in more missiles against Itachi but instead of dodging them as he previously did, Itachi intends to let nothing deviate him from his straight course towards Deva Path. He is finally prepared to use his most powerful move… Susanoo!
Blocking Asura Path’s missiles with his susanoo’s yata mirror, Itachi finally makes contact. Yata mirror is again used to crush Asura Path to the ground whilst the totsuka sword is swung at Preta Path, who was protecting Deva Path. Using his ability, Preta Path tries to absorb the sword and ultimately its wielder, the susanoo. As they clash, reality seems to distort around them. Finally, after a momentary tie, the totsuka sword wins over Preta Path and starts to suck him into its sheath. Deva Path, now fully recharged after his last use of the shinra tensei, reacts immediately. Using bensho tenin, he sends Asura Path’s incapacitated body to safety and succeeds to pull Preta Path from the totsuka sword’s grip, also sending him to safety. The countering effects of the bensho tenin and totsuka sword have weared Preta Path’s body which is now also incapacitated. Deva Path chains a mighty shinra tensei which blows most of susanoo away, propulsing his user away as well. With his armor temporarily destroyed, Itachi feels the attack and is unable to recover in mid-air. He rolls heavily on the ground and leaves a trail of blood. As he finally gets back up, he dispels his susanoo and deactivates his mangekyou sharingan since both have been using up his chakra at an insane rate after he got severely injured. Moreover, his other health problems, which he has been successfully ignoring since the beginning of the battle, are coming back at him. Though he now faces only two ‘paths’, the battle has turned to his disadvantage.
Seeing as how Itachi is nearing his limits, Deva Path and Animal Path charge at him. Itachi hardly puts up any defense and gets a bashing. He now appears in trance and close to faint. However, when he is meant to go down a final time, he remembers his goals and the glimmer of life comes back into his eyes. He catches Deva Path and Animal Path off-guard by recovering from his fall. Looking back at Deva Path with his mangekyou sharingan reactivated, he casts ameterasu flames on him. Deva Path uses once more his shinra tensei to rid himself of the amaterasu flames although sacrificing Animal Path in the process. However, the amaterasu flames have been able to fairly incapacitate his body before being put out. As for Itachi, even though he got hit and propulsed away once more by the shinra tensei, he takes less time to get back on his feet since he is now running only on willpower and is hardly concerned with the pain. With the other ‘paths’ out, Deva Path can now enter god mode. But due to the effects of the amaterasu flames, he cannot use his body for the fight and chooses to cast his most powerful jutsu instead… Chibaku Tensei!
Pulling in every surrounding matter such as earth, rocks and trees, Deva Path’s chibaku tensei alterates the battlefield and builds up a massive moon-like mass in the sky. Itachi is unable to resist the pull and gets also sucked into the ‘moon’. However, after some seconds, the ‘moon’ starts to warp. The warp is actually caused by Itachi’s susanoo which is using its totsuka sword to absorb the matter around in order to create an exit. Susanoo’s head can then be sighted as it tries to get out of the ‘moon’ and overlooks Deva Path. Amazed by Itachi’s remarkable willpower which has enabled him to summon his susanoo once more, Deva Path reacts too slowly when susanoo sends his yata mirror at him similarly to throwing a disc. The yata mirror rolls on Deva Path and crushes his body. The chibaku tensei is dispelled and all six ‘paths’ are now defeated.
With this fight over, Itachi searches the surrounding area in order to locate the real Pain and is able to recover a bit in the meantime. He eventually finds Pain and, upon confronting him, Itachi finally uses his tsukuyomi before Pain can launch any attack. Konan tries to intervene but is no match for Itachi. However, suddenly popping out from nowhere, Tobi appears and succeeds to break Itachi’s tsukuyomi on Pain in an instant. He then teleports Konan and Pain to another location and himself disappear after reprimanding Itachi for his action. Having his tsukuyomi broken and with all enemies gone, Itachi is no longer able to maintain his composure and fall on his knees, feeling the pain all over his battered body and thinking that it’s about time to meet his little brother...
