A text based role playing game was unappealing to start with, atleast in the context of Naruto and ninja battles. So much of time was spent deciding if a move worked or not. When you can't see whats happening and just have to describe it the moves are up for interperation. Sometimes what worked to block an attack in one battle didn't work in another because mods or senseis interperted the move differently.
Oh and also the insane op custom moves that some of us could only hope to get some of, or if we were lucky could maybe get a move to counter it even a bit. Like honestly I'm still a little pissed about when solf used fang mode on us. It put me off the rp from that point on, because when a game can approve of a jutsu you can't react to unless you got lucky enough to not only be a sensei but pass the mankekyo sharingan test too, it discourages anyone else from joining because how can you compete with that :/ it stopped being about fun and was about what insane crap can I get away with in the custom jutsu submisson thread. its like pay to win but worse because its join the rp in 2008 to win because you got away with crazy bull shiz and they don't want to take away peoples customs from back then. In fact I'm pretty sure theres this one ice user from 2008 who still has an aburame bio with byukugan because he got it before they cleaned up and never went to get his bio updated again.
A lot of the previous problems that you mentioned have slowly been phased out, excluding the arguing and quoting. That's something that still tends to go on when tournaments happen or battles take place. The RP itself has been slow for a while due to the current arc but if there are abilities you wanted, for example, Mangekyou Sharingan like you mentioned, or even things like Yin-Yang, EMS, etc they've all become more attainable via the kumi system. Additionally, you can remove yourself from battles almost completely, if you don't like that content by performing missions and obtaining the kumi that way.
I personally find missions, more entertaining than I found battles and I don't have to worry about being quoted. You don't have to worry as much about if a mod will give you permission for something big that you want because you can just buy it. I got ahold of Yang, Yin, Yin-Yang and Fuuinjutsu all through the kumi system. The only thing that is gated behind permission is like Kaguya Otsutsuki. Alternatively, there are new combinations you can have due to the dual abilities feature. I think you can now have Aburame, and Hyuuga or other KG + HAs, KG + AEs or AEs+ HA etc if that's something you've always wanted to mess around with.
Though in the end it's completely understandable if you don't want to RP anymore, a lot of people have fallen off of it. For a while there only my village was really "active" in the NW and even we were only just doing it to entertain ourselves. If I can pull them out of it, I'll probably try to get my village active again in the following arcs if they want.
