In the literal sense, no they are not. *** is strictly biological while gender is not.

*** refers to the the biological distinction between females and males, which is closely related to reproduction, while gender refers to the social attributes and opportunity associated with being female and male.

And in AFK's comment, he was referencing biology.
Gender meaning what you identify as is not true. Sure, it might mean what you identify as, meaning Male or Female, because no one was dumb enough to have a **** yet claim they were female back them. Its the same as '***'. There was no such thing as "what made up gender you identify as" until recently.

Yep, it's just semantics.

Again, transgenders existed since dawn of civilization, so you are wrong.

Provide reliable sources or sit down.
Ok, no problem.

"India’s trans women community, or Hijra, has been a part of the subcontinent for about as long as civilization has. With a recorded history of over 4,000 years and being mentioned in ancient texts, the Hijra community is a testament to the sexual diversity that is integral yet often forgotten in Indian culture."

"The history of hijras dates back thousands of years, where a third *** is first mentioned—and they are celebrated—in ancient Hindu texts such as the “Mahabharata” and the “Kama Sutra.”

"Another historical connection of the hijras appears to be with the Magna Mata cults in ancient Greece, whose devotees also dressed in women's clothing and sometimes castrated themselves."

"The gallae were a group of priests in the cult of Kybele who first appear
in classical literature in the late third and early second century BCE. They have
attracted the attention of classical scholars by virtue of their unconventional
dress, speech, and behavior that was labeled "feminine" by their
contemporaries, despite the fact that the gallae were born with male genitals"

People who distance themselves from being female or male because of religious/cultural reasons are not the same as modern transgenders, who feel like they were born in the wrong body.

Wow, first you deny the APA, then you deny the British Psychology Society, and all other major psychological organizations.

And now you're denying historical evidence and making more excuses? Really, where do you draw the line?

I denied those "large organizations" because what they're saying is a sack of shit. They are claiming it doesnt cause enough distress to be classified a mental illness, even though it HAS been proven that transgenders are 20x more likely to commit suicide. Rather than helping these people, they decide to let them permanently remove their genitalia, completely destroying their reproductive system. Lol.

Also, the only link you provided me said Transgenders should be treated equal, nothing debunking the idea of it being a mental illness.

The Hijra are transgender for religious/cultural reasons.

No, that's just because you don't want to accept that you're wrong.

It's always convenient to deny something you don't like. But when it comes to things you feel are serious, you then listen to these "sack of shit" organizations.

Saying it has been proven when the majority of psychologists say otherwise, makes you wrong. Really, I don't understand how someone can be so stubborn.

If we were discussing the existence of evolution, would you disregard what the major consensus on that subject is as well? No need to answer, as the question is rhetorical.

As it stands, there is no point in continuing this debate with you as your argument is nothing but constant denial of historical and psychological facts.

Transgenders has never existed in western society, it may be a aspect of a certain society but that isn't western civilization. Only small numbers of people have ever identified as transsexual. Its always been a minority and as such should stay a minority, it shouldn't be normalized. The notion of imagining you are a different gender is without a doubt a mental illness since you are imagining you are a different gender. "A mental disorder, also called a mental illness[2] or psychiatric disorder, is a behavioral or mental pattern that may cause suffering or a poor ability to function in life."

"Any of various conditions characterized by impairment of an individual's normal cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning, and caused by social, psychological, biochemical, genetic, or other factors, such as infection or head trauma. Also called emotional illness, mental disease, mental disorder.

Now once you look at the statistics regarding transsexual suicide rates, high rate of other mental illnesses as well as the high amounts of pedophilia that stems from such a small percentage of the population, is it not accurate to say that being transgender and the likes mentally incapacitates them. The WHO and John Hopkins agree

"The World Health Organization is moving toward declassifying transgender identity as a mental disorder in its global list of medical conditions, with a new study lending additional support to a proposal that would delete the decades-old designation.

The change, which has so far been approved by each committee that has considered it, is under review for the next edition of the W.H.O. codebook, which classifies diseases and influences the treatment of patients worldwide."

"In 2014, the WHO acknowledged that linking transgender people to mental illness is harmful and pledged to remove the link from their next International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD)—but this version isn’t slated for release until 2017."

"In August, Johns Hopkins psychiatry professor Paul McHugh and biostatistician Lawrence Mayer published a 116-page “special report” on gender and sexual orientation in The New Atlantis, a conservative bioethics magazine. The report made a number of claims that have long been rejected by gender and sexuality researchers. It falsely implies that children are “encouraged to become transgender” and that young transgender children undergo medical interventions as part of affirming their gender identities. In addition, it suggests that:

-Being lesbian, gay, bisexual or queer is caused by childhood sexual abuse
-LGBTQ people have inherent psychological difficulties
-Sexual orientation is a choice and can be changed

Gender and sexuality researchers, including some of those cited in the report, have called out its serious flaws. Among them is distinguished geneticist and scientist emeritus at the National Institutes of Health, Dean Hamer. Hamer, whose career has included key publications on the relationship between genes and sexual orientation, says McHugh and Mayer “twisted and misinterpreted” legitimate research to their own ends. Those ends may include the $400-an-hour fee Mayer collected for defending North Carolina’s deeply discriminatory HB2 law in a federal civil rights lawsuit."

[1] It doesn't say they don't believe it, only that it negatively affects transgender people and shouldn't be used to describe the disorder.

No, it's not my opinion. How are you unable to comprehend this?

Again, let me make this clear to you. I'm not giving you my point of view; I am referencing the research of the APA.

The APA is the largest organization of psychologists in the U.S. They are the ones who diagnose and label disorders.

YOU ARE WRONG!
+Rep just for enduring a person this dense.

How can someone be smart enough to graduate but also fail to understand the difference between an opinion on an internet forum and our current agreed understanding and definition of it...?
