If you were among the crowd that ardently wanted more of the Dragonball series, when Toriyama ended the prominent series with Dragonball GT, concluding with Goku leaving the earth as he rode on Shanron's back, you probably heard all the rumors about the series coming back. And was madly disappointed by the false alarm.
However, from researching more, or simply hearing from friends, you also found out about Dragonball AF. A continuation of Dragonball GT from this point:

Dragonball AF, originally was a concept that was suppose to continue the concluded Dragonball GT series, that Toriyama himself declared it was his last work.
But because of the demand of insatiable fans that had supported the series throughout the years, and how the story seemed left inconclusively, he was at a demand to wrap things up for good, and that premise brought about Dragonball GT, which would air on our TV screens in 2012.
Timeously, he delivered as his talent would allow, and we got another journey with Goku and the dragon balls, as this time, Goku and his friends had to save the world from the creatures born out of the darkness that accumulated from each time they used them for a friend's revival.
An executed fictional idea, Dragonball AF presents a continuation to that story, as how it ended in GT, and goes into Goku's endless potential as a world fighter, as he continues getting stronger to the point of acquiring a new transformation that furthers on Super Saiyan 4.

A source I found says about DBAF:
''Dragon Ball AF was originally the creation of an unknown fan that evidently had a strong desire for a fourth Dragon Ball anime series.
A single image appeared on the web of a hypothetical Super Saiyan 5 Goku with a “Dragon Ball AF” logo on it, and from there it spread like wildfire.
The rumor grew gradually over the years and took on a life of its own, spawning many fan creations, illustrations, videos, episode listings, action figures, and even high quality fan manga based on the collective rumors.''

With that discovered, I did a little deeper research and found out few interesting things in regards to AF. And one of them was that DBAF was actually a legit concept that came from Toriyama's right-hand man who worked with him throughout all of his work. I'm not sure if that is really true, but it seems it'd be someone who was really a fan that'd come up with this idea, as it continues well on how Toriyama finished the series off.
Allegedly, it's still continuing. However, it's not officially licensed, and can thus be put in the fan-fiction category.
Dragonball Super, though a legitimate series that got a nod from Toriyama himself, doesn't commence from where Dragonball GT ended. In fact, it discards GT completely, as Goku doesn't start off with Super Saiyan 4, a transformation he gets through means such as growing back his tail, but gets a different one that diverges from that concept, and instead is a variation of the one we see in Dragonball Z: Battle of Gods:

A transformation that is fairly similar, it gives the Saiyan blue hair, a blue aura to go along with, and is essentially a replica with different resplendence:

At the start of the manga, Goku's metamorphosis was superfluous and repugnant. How he loses the grandad status. How he's fairly young again, and more goofy and reckless, and how he's actually just annoyingly enthusiastic about fighting stronger opponents and in that, is apathetic to the well-being of his friends, even lately risking earth's existence by talking Zen-Oh into putting on a tournament that threatens literally all the existing universe's perpetuation, and how he simply contradicts the Dragonball GT one.
He isn't the exact or arguably even remotely the Goku we saw fight Cell with concern for earth's survival, and took fights seriously, instead, flashing a smile at menacing enemies who declared to destroy the planet that holds the lives of his friends.
There's even an article censuring Goku's character change:

As often said, DBS was conceptualized with a different perspective than possibly all the versions of Goku we got to see in the Dragonball series.
But public opinions share that Dragonball Super, despite losing innumerable fans that joined Goku on his journey before Dragonball's phenomenal success, retains an almost as great though lesser version of the atmospheric fights of Dragonall Z, and still brings the same entertainment, albeit, not as great as the previous parts of the series.
With all of that said, taking into account that Dragonball AF isn't financed, and could, with a team of professionals joined together, bring good quality manga/animation of a higher caliber, do you suppose it could've pulled it off better and succeeded and also cultivated the fanbase? And do you think if it'd have been better to amalgamate concepts with Dragonball Super?
With some research, I found these interesting pictures that showcase the content that can be expected in DBAF:
