Because it gives me hope for something bigger beyond this life, because how can you explain us just happening by accident, how can you be OK with the wicked not getting the punishment they deserve while the good suffer instead? Saying atheists are, even in majority, just a depressed bunch goes in the same vein as saying that religious people only use religion as a means to reassure themselves that there's something after you die and that otherwise they'd go insane without it.
