How much does the artstyle of the manga/anime affect its overall quality for you?

Well, if you watch Naruto and DBS till this day then you tell me Gunt
It is a major component, but its the least important major component of them all. I don't watch DBS nor Naruto for the animation. I watch DBS because I genuinely like it...most of the time, anyway, and I watch Naruto for the Shinden novels....well, I'm not watching right now, and I skipped the entirety of the end of the Obito fight all the way until the end of the Kaguya fight, which was when VOTE2 was announced.

If the artstyle is terrible in my opinion (best example is One Piece) or just not appealing to me in any way, then I don't give it a try. No matter how good reviews or recommendations might be.

Not really. I can't think of a series that I dislike mainly because of its art style. If it does bother me then I'll get used to it over time.

If one punch and many other animes didn't have that art style/animation most of then wouldn't even be populaire. It annoys me when the animation is shit

Considering manga is largely a visual medium, if you don't find the visuals appealing then yes. That's kind of a bid deal. A personal example is One Piece, I just don't find the art style very appealing, which places a very large mental block in my mind whenever I attempt to give it another chance. It doesn't matter how good the story or the characters are.

By comparison, here's how the same question looks in different mediums: How much does cinematography affect a film to you? How much does grammar affect a book to you? How much does gameplay affect a video game to you?

Well...you are the exception though. You like Jojo's.

The very reason I made this thread is because a lot of people here from what I looked up were turned off on it because of its artstyle when things like One Punch Man and One Piece have proved how little a part it plays on the creation of a quality manga. I do wonder why....

Which means it doesn't matter if you truly enjoy and love what you watch, just like me.

And I'm pretty sure there are others who feel the exact same way...well to be fair animation back then was the best for both those series which I think in turn the animators and creators thought "hey, we gave them crispy ass animation back then and built a strong fanbase with story, intense moments, great characters, we good bro" years later... "lets bring that back or continue that, but only we already have the fanbases sniffing at our asses that we don't have to work as hard because we built a core fanbase off of the old stuff"

It doesn't matter if someone can't get into a series because of its art-style. Don't need to talk with someone that ignorant.

What series are you talking about? JoJo?

However they don't get paid as much because people don't buy the blu-ray... that's the point.

If you aren't buying and supporting the series like you should then you have no room to complain.

I don't know if you guys have noticed but: voice acting, animators, etc. are dropping fast, no one is supporting hardcore like back then and there is so much more competition. And I hate the other competition, especially shit I don't watch.

Those are different though. The artstyle will always be your first impression of it, regardless of what you're reading or watching. You can watch a brilliant film with simplistic cinematography all the way through if you see it has other things going for it, you can read a novel without perfect grammar if something about it compels you, you can sustain bad gameplay if the video game has something else to offer.

With anime and manga though...its different. Unlike the other cases, you can judge it as a book by its cover. You aren't even allowed a chance to experience what its got before you give up on it.

Well, I think in this case animation would be more important than artstyle. IMO, if the manga has a strange artstyle but a good story, characters, pacing....its still worth it. Anime is mostly adapting manga stories with the primary purpose of animating them. If its the primary purpose, its not something you should fail on. Especially in the case of adaptations.

You do make a good point though.

Don't confuse it. Animation and art style are two very different things. EG: Mob Psycho 100. Very simplistic art style, incredible animation.

Anime: this one is important for the seriousness IMO, look as DBS.... terrible animation turned me off after a while.

Manga: Art style really doesn't matter if the story keeps you going.

In the end between the two I think animation is important for people to keep going, story for manga
