This thread will likely drag on for a bit, so if you don't want to read the whole thing, skip the spoiler section and just read the summary, thanks.
Summary:
I feel that the fact Trump lost the popular vote yet won the electoral college by such a large margin is very disturbing. This election was completely unlike 2000 in the sense that Gore only lost in the electoral college by a small margin. Trump, on the other hand, somehow won by at least 40 electoral votes despite losing the popular vote. This makes me believe Democrats have a serious disadvantage in the electoral college, as their numbers are more isolated than Republicans. If a trend were to arise where Democrats are becoming more isolated in certain states, I could easily imagine a future where Republicans have a serious advantage in the electoral college where they are almost certain to win future elections. If such a thing were to happen and we became essentially a one party nation... what would result? Does this possibility scare anyone else?
Please take note I'm a registered republican and not a Democratic sympathizer. Rather, I simply fear for the current balance that exists between our two major parties.
Now before this election, I don't think anyone would have thought it was possible for a president elect to lose the popular vote and win the electoral college by such a large margin. Personally, I considered the results of the 2000 election a fluke simply because I had never known of it happening before (not since the 1800's at least) and thought it would never happen again. Not only that, but Gore only lost the electoral vote by a small margin so it was somewhat understandable.
In Trumps case, however, he managed to lose the popular vote by a minuscule margin yet win the electoral vote by at least 40 delegates. That, in itself, is absolutely astounding. Not astounding in the sense that Trump did well to attain it, but astounding that our system could possibly allow it to happen. If you ask me, it seems Democrats have a serious disadvantage in the electoral college.
Consider the fact that Democrats are favored highly in big populace states like New York and California. Taking those states might help them take advantage in the popular vote, but it hurts them in the electoral college. I think its safe to say that republicans take a majority of states even when they lose, simply because their voter base is more spread and Democrats are more concentrated.
Put simply? If such a drastic variance of popular vote vs. electoral vote can happen once, its likely to happen again or get worse. The worst case is that Republicans become widespread enough or Democrats become concentrated enough to where Republicans win the electoral vote almost every time. I can honestly see us becoming a one party nation in as little as 50 years if such a phenomenon were to continue. Am I crazy or does this scare other people too?
