Hashirama will lose if he's at close-range with Gai, but he's mostly a Taijutsu fighter so he'll keep his distance and change the landscape to put down Gai.

Well, really dont think that the sand of Gaara was next to Gai in a instant, i believe that when Minato used the FTG yo get between the seeker balls and Gai, he did not only teleported him, he also teleported Gaara's Sand and Kakashi, because b4 he gave a Kunai yo Kakashu and Gaara.

Madara has already shown to merge with mokuton the buddha is mokuton so Hashirama hiding out inside SS is a perfect strategy against gai.

Guy in 8th Gate is FTE (Faster than eye), he easily can reach hashirama on top of the buddah and attack him directly with EE without the buddah being able to react
