Madara didn't need to evade when he could block your whole post is base on the assumption that Hashirama attacks instead of blocks against gai who gates are limited he's not bursting through ss.

He can merge with the buddha and once he does it's over for gai. He doesn't have to try to attack gai all he does is wait him out. Gai did not slow down for them to carry out there plain seeing as he wasn't even aware of what the plan was.

It wouldn't matter if Gai started in the 8th gate. Hashirama is still clapping his hands to utilize his large scale Mokuton and Gai isn't stopping him from doing so.
