Who, other than the members knew of the conflict manifesting within the clan? Why was is so important that Itachi spearheaded the destruction or coup?

Because Itachi was stronger, wiser, and more skilled than any Uchiha at that point. I'm positive even Obito knew he'd be better as an ally than someone as an enemy.

I think Danzo could easily summon an army because hurizen was being a noob and the elders were on his side. Other than that these are some fair points

itachi was one of the strongest among them who had unlocked the very rare MS, who wouldnt want him on their side? how does that even prove anything? not to mention he was the son of the leader, and am pretty sure he would in most anything want his son fighting with him rather than against.
