Hey, I know NB is hardly the best of places to vent personal stuff & I know you don't know me personally but....

I've been a Youtuber for 6 years now, I've made all kinda content (right now it's Anime theories & editorials) but if anybody else knows the Youtube landscape or the coding system....you know that Googletube has done everything in it's power to push out the little guy & make money off of Let's Play channels and reaction vids.

Now for the record- my goal is NOT to make money or a career from Youtube, never has been never will. I want a career in video editing and film production so this is all good practice but it's becoming evidently clear that as I approach my seventh year on the site that if I continue at the same pace with my creative freedom and as a hobby....i'm not going to be getting anywhere.

I'm proud of the content and I get very good feedback but it doesn't reflect in views, which I find myself becoming more interested in as I grow older.....as I start to look for a career. See where i'm going with this? How does my hobby slowly turn into my job? Clearly I can't rely on Youtube but does that mean I should pack it up? It's basically the most time-consuming hobby you could have and the acknowledgement/pay-off isn't worth it

Is this the beginning of reality slowly creeping in and destroying my dreams? Or something I love that should be ditched for emotional closure/job-seeking. Please help, any mature input would be great.

It can only become a job when you get enough money to survive. That requires luck. You have to get some exposure. It's a huge mix of luck and work.

I, honestly, think you should keep doing it if you love it no matter what. If it's a hobby forever, that's okay. Not everything you love has to be a job. Nothing wrong with having whatever job to get money, to support yourself, and leave all your free time to things you love, including this hobby. Realistically, you probably aren't the next like pewdiepie or whatever. Nobody knows what path you could be. It's all random, but the most important thing is not random. The most important thing is you loving your hobby. If you love it, it doesn't matter if it'll never become a job. Just do you man.

Haha thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

I just feel like I committed to what happens to be the most time-consuming hobby out there... which could be time spent on the next script or assembling a crew or getting my name out there doing volunteer stuff. I get this way sometimes so it could be a grump phase.....but I feel like the real sting is that you don't even have to make it that big to get super cushy houses and big studio budgets. Jontron lives in NY & has sets, KSI bought a f*cking Ferarri for generically playing FIFA even Sam Pepper has a great lifestyle....It's the right person in the right place and it just sucks that it would've happened by now.

I don't want to change my content to gimmicky popular LP crap just bc the algorithm is suited to it...but there's a compromise somewhere. Maybe at the very least I should invest less effort and time into my videos. I mean....i've been on it since 2011 and have over 350 videos xD my times passed lol
