Yea, or what if your fat or have bad legs, are disabled or elderly

And yes they have normal toilets too

There's rarely a fat person in those Asian countries, especially Japan. This isn't even a generalization at all. Besides hearing about a "non-fat bill" that means no one is allowed to be fat in Japan, those countries aren't likely to have people past a certain weight. There isn't much of a high protein diet like the Western World (which ironically is usually referenced as the heavier countries) as they eat more Carbs, which doesn't account for much weight gain.

I don't see any problems with toilets being designed that way, unless your disabled, and I'm sure the Japanese have provisions for that case. I mean, squatting is a good form of exercise for you body, and after a while you'll get used to it.

But I understand what you mean about empty rooms.

This is all true. Although I must say with regards to the bold, that with the slight Westernisation of Asian countries, "fat" people are likely to be more common amongst the younger generation. I read a book from a doctor once about healthy living, and he paid a visit to Japan. He said he was saddened by one thing in his trip, and he showed a photo of a overweight looking young lad and his grandfather, and said "A picture tells a thousand words".

By Westernisation I assume you mean the prevalence of fast food places (like McDonalds) becoming common even in those countries?

Yes, that's what I meant, and why I only said "slight" Westernisation.

Yeah, that makes sense. That picture example you used is spot on. Kind of sad, but spot on nonetheless.

I don't know if there are a lot of big empty rooms. My sister's apartment was about the size of a postage stamp. I suppose when you get outside of Tokyo prefecture, you might see some more space. The reason for the empty rooms is because of minimalism, which I love. A cluttered home leads to a cluttered mind. Despite its density (or perhaps because of it) there is a lot of respect for other's space. The trains are so cramped that they make sardine cans look spacious, but no one's coughing on you or playing their music so loud that you can hear it.

My biggest complaint would be the cost of living; ridiculous.

Edit: You haven't experienced food until you go to a real ramen-ya.

Regarding the toilets:

1) A lot of toilets are "western-style" nowadays, with extra functions like built in bidets and seat warmers. This is especially true for inner city areas, like Minato.

You must be registered for see images

2) The squatting position is actually recommended as the "best way" to do your business.

Anyway, bread isn't often good in Japan. Their canned bread is even worse.

Nothing 'cus I ain't no damn weeaboo.

This made me laugh more than it should.

OT:The toilet thing doesn't bother me. I don't sit on public toilets anyway because it's unsanitary. I like the idea of minimalism in the household but maybe not as extreme as the Japanese. My house is furnished with everything I need for everyday life without going overboard on luxuries.

Those toilets are not a problem, when you're used to it though it will be hard if you've problems of squatting ( saying from experience when i had muscle problems in legs ) but we've both types of toilets around here lol

probably how they're living with earthquakes .

I've been reading about Japanese stereotypes lately, will be back after finding it.

Check if you can gain some knowledge about Japanese :)

You find perplexing, what are the things about Japan that you would find difficult to adjust to if you lived there or visited?

For me it would be

Japanese toilets, you don't sit, you squat, I find this very difficult, no way I could use one and people carry those seats with a hole in them if they have troubles squatting. They have the same toilets in many places in Asia, China and Korea for a fact, I don't get why anyone would design a toilet that way.

And Japanese houses, traditional ones, I mean all those rooms and there is nothing in them, whats the point? I mean, I can understand a sense of calm about having so many empty rooms but wouldn't it get depressing after a while

This is a good natured discussion so please, don't turn in into a political or social slanging match, thanks

lol But frankly speaking those toilets are better in case you are female you know- less chances of catching infection and it keeps your mussels more flexible for child birth. U_U XD

Here is an article for you:

As for empty houses - if you are going to have earthquakes frequently you may as well don't bother hanging a painting which can fall on your head anyway.. And less things for dusting off. U_U

I've seen lots of fat Asian and Japanese people, there are fat comedians, radio hosts and just general people in the streets, although granted, they do seem to have less fat people than us

I am female and I can tell you those toilets have no appeal and I would like to dare any man to squat and give birth, giving birth is absolute agony no matter what the position, let them try pushing something the size of a melon out of something the size of a lemon, which is a description of child birth I once heard that stuck LOL

Besides, what if you are disabled and my legs don't work very well, I couldn't squat, I would have to take my own chair, LOL

The hotel I stayed in the only time I was there, had the western seat so.. I guess you can find one. If you are moving there then I am sure you will have a few options even then. lol

There are quite a few public ones too.

The latest ones with the LCD control panels are really kewl. After being massaged, washed, dried and deodorized, your rear leaves more refined than when it went in.

..Err... not really sure if I would like to use something like that in sharing...in a public one...

Not even sure I want to discuss it on internet...

Lol, most of them are individual cubicles.

A few of them are really randomly placed on streets in busy areas though. XD

Whilst Japan has the lowest obesity rates in the world, a significant proportion are considered obese. And what you refer to is a law which aims to keep a check on obese people in the workplace but in reality, doesn't work.

Supposedly, each business is required to report on the waist sizes of all employees and the people considered obese will be sent to counselling sessions and the business will be fined.

But really, it doesn't work and lost brevity from the year dot. A large number of businesses lie or the employees will slip their bosses a few yen if they're over the limit.

This is all true. Although I must say with regards to the bold, that with the slight Westernisation of Asian countries, "fat" people are likely to be more common amongst the younger generation. Actually, obesity is being blamed on the increasingly popular likes of instant ramen. A lot of people, regardless of age, turn to it instead of preparing meals because not only is it cheaper, but also because it's quicker.

But because it has a lot of saturated fat, the speed/cheapness comes at a cost.

Fast food chains in Japan have been around for decades, it's only with the boom in instant food that obesity has took a slight hike.

I'm surprised you guys never knew about the toilets they have. I mean in america we sit on like porcelain chairs to take a dump. In Africa most of those guys in tribes go out and squat then wipe with a leave. I remember studying in science that it's healthier and also it's cleaner.
