You find perplexing, what are the things about Japan that you would find difficult to adjust to if you lived there or visited?

For me it would be

Japanese toilets, you don't sit, you squat, I find this very difficult, no way I could use one and people carry those seats with a hole in them if they have troubles squatting. They have the same toilets in many places in Asia, China and Korea for a fact, I don't get why anyone would design a toilet that way.

And Japanese houses, traditional ones, I mean all those rooms and there is nothing in them, whats the point? I mean, I can understand a sense of calm about having so many empty rooms but wouldn't it get depressing after a while

This is a good natured discussion so please, don't turn in into a political or social slanging match, thanks

The tentacle porn just doesn't do it for me.

Now I enjoy bestiality just as much as the next guy, I just prefer it to be land based.

It's better for you! Reduces the risk of varicose veins and cardiac stress. Humans were made for squatting, not sitting on synthetic chairs.

Yep, the toilets in Bangladesh are similar. It's probably some Asian custom that you have to sit when taking a shit.

But what if your legs/thighs are tired & you end up falling in your own waste? :|

It’s not just Japan with their toilets same goes for South Korea,China and so on the Chinese style of Toilet takes precedence over the Roman/Western style. Chinese culture influence the Orient the same way as Greco-Roman culture influences the West.

The only thing that worries me is possibly about the way they work there, i guess. My teacher (whom had worked there) said it was weirdly stressful, though it depended on that worker himself.

Japanese toilets, you don't sit, you squat, I find this very difficult, no way I could use one and people carry those seats with a hole in them if they have troubles squatting. They have the same toilets in many places in Asia, China and Korea for a fact, I don't get why anyone would design a toilet that way.

There was a few members here had point out the reasons of why such toilet was designed that way. :)

Another reason was most Asians, the ancestors, had developed their own methods in identifying symptoms towards several illnesses to improve one's health. One of them was by creating the squat toilet. Aside to channel the faeces out smoothly, the long length from the drop point of the faeces to the hole was to give chance for one to observe their shapes or forms, since they as well indicated the level of health.

And Japanese houses, traditional ones, I mean all those rooms and there is nothing in them, whats the point? I mean, I can understand a sense of calm about having so many empty rooms but wouldn't it get depressing after a while

Old Japanese seems to prioritise their guests. Empty rooms are not only for sense of qualms or something, but mainly prepared for their guests or relatives to spend the night in their houses. My ancestors also tend to build an old wooden house with large room, and more rooms are either for guests or for the daughters' privacy.

Thanks for the info on the toilets. It would obviously be difficult to get accustomed to the difference.
