Cruyff was art, but Beckenbauer bettered him TBH.
Well, Germany had a much better team. Realize, Cruyff was around 27 at the time, Backenbauer was around 29. Obviously, Backenbauer was in the peak of his career, he also had a much better team. I mean, Backen was able to perfect the defense, and allowed Gerd to do his thing in the offense. While Holland was more dominate in their ability to move and control the game overall, but Talent wise 1974 Germany was right next to Holland. The style of play Holland was better, however, Germany's players were just in their prime. Neeshkens, who was Hollands second best player, was merely 22 at the time. Germany simply got it at the right time, and the majority of the players had the perfect blend of experience and physical ability. The game was very tight, anyone could have won that game, Germany just got it, it is not even something to explain how, or why it happened. It just did, and no one is complaining cause their is nothing to complain. Lets just appreciate the fact that two of the top 4 greatest of all time players were seen on the same pitch and fought admirably. One of the greatest games purely talent wise.

Also, I don't think Backen necessarily battered Cruyff. I mean did you see his run in the begging of the game? The game was low scoring, so obviously it was tailored to Backen, but I think they both were quite well. I have not seen the recording of the game in a while, so I can not give a in-depth analysis, but from what I remember, Cruyff was more towards the Midfield, playing a organizer role and allowed Neshkens to play a little bit more up-top. But I could be wrong, I should really re-watch the tape, its a pure classic.
Brilliant analysis between Cryuff and Maradona, just excellent.

Fifa, I think should either start awarding players for individual positions Like midfielder, forward, GK etc.
Or should start to pay more emphasis on their team of the year, which often gets almost no attention anywhere, as Fifa pays much more importance to Ballon d’Or.
At the end of the day football is a team sport and bar 2-3 legends, a team wins it, Germany showed it in this years WC, Atletico Madrid showed it in last years club competition, they should make Fifa's team of the year most revered award in football.

Manchester City 0 - 2 Newcastle United

Stoke City 2-3 Southampton

Hamburger SV 1-3 F.C. Bayern München

Thank you.

Well, the reason those other awards are not given more recognition is mainly how Fifa advertises the players and how people try to hype it up. Player of the year is much more then, who is the best player. Look at the feud between Ronaldo vs Messi or Ronaldo (Brazil) vs Zidane. Those guys in their era were respectively the poster boys and were hyped. Everyone argued who was the best, but people expanded it more. People made it seem like, if Ronaldo was the best player, then Brazil was better then France (which is what Zidane repped), or that the South American Continent produces better Talent then the European. It is just peoples way of trying to cause more arguments and expanding something more then it is suppose to. It is just how it has always been.

Player of the year used to be awesome though, because it was not so predictable. There used to be a time where, Figo, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Zidane, Raul, and many more all had equal chances to winning it.

Now, it is either Ronaldo or Messi. Which is stupid, because half the years they got it they probably never deserved it. Not at least under my jurisdiction, others might disagree. It always been about the poster boys in Football. I like the team of the year award, but my favorite awards to watch is the Fifa best 11 team award. Where they pick individual players and make a team of each player in the position they played in and make a team out of those players chosen. That way, you can see a lot of people all over the place and most of the time, a lot of the players get attention.

27 can be considered peak as well but I agree, Germany was a better squad overall.

I mean, Backen was able to perfect the defense, and allowed Gerd to do his thing in the offense.
Not only perfect the defense but perfect the Midfield and the final 3rd by linking all lines with incredible vision and passing, specifically that outside the foot pass of his.
His defensive ability and passing ability were legendary.

It was written for this generation of German footballers to win the WC. But at the same time Cruyff deserved to win it too. who knows maybe he could have won it in 1978. Unfortunate he decided to retired...

Lets just appreciate the fact that two of the top 4 greatest of all time players were seen on the same pitch and fought admirably. One of the greatest games purely talent wise.
Don't get me wrong I admire Cruyff, the greatest false nine of all time. The reason I'm giving this to Becken is because whether the team is attacking of defending, he is the mastermind. Always on the ball, controlling the game. Once in a life time defender really.
2 of the greatest 4 indeed, the greatest 4 are Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane and Beckenbauer IMO. With Maradona as #1.

It could, but what I have taken notice, an overall athlete retains perfect physique by 30 years old, and its the perfect mix of intelligence as well.

Backen was way to underrated as a play maker. His ability to dribble was amazing as a defender, how he dashed and went by people was amazing. He barreled through tackles. Germany had one particularly good Midfielder but I forgot his name, he scored in a penalty in the final. He was a underrated player.

It was written for this generation of German footballers to win the WC. But at the same time Cruyff deserved to win it too. who knows maybe he could have won it in 1978. Unfortunate he decided to retired...
I always say, if Cruyff plays 1978, Holland most likely wins. Grant it, 1978 was also extremely corrupted with the Brazil problem and Argentina government issues. No way of telling, but he would have been in top shape and much better prepared.

I agree, Backen is the greatest 1 on 1 player ever. He can guard anyone because of his superior defensive ability, but at the same time, no one is guarding Backen. Only person who can beat a prime Becken one on one could be Maradona, and that is because Maradona and his passion on the field, how he gave his heart to winning, and everything in between is just unmatched.

Though Cruyff is my favorite of all time, he is revolutionized the game at a mental standpoint. I still believe, if he had won, just one WC, he goes down as the greatest of all time.

Also, I love how you did not say Pele. Too many people say he is the best. I mean, why is Garrincha not considered better O_O?
He won 1958 with Pele.
Won the WC by himself in 1962 with Pele not even playing in it (just one game) cause he was injured. Yet people are free to give him 3 WC's. Please, Pele won his first two cause of Garrincha and 1970 Brazil formulated the greatest team ever. Jairzinho, Rivelinho, Alberto, etc. Its shameful what people do to Garrincha.

Your list looks a lot like mine.

Cruyff (I'm biased :/, I won't argue if people switch Cruyff with Maradona or even Backen since he did beat him, personally those three can be put in any position and it would be hard to argue)
Maradona
Backen
Zidane

More experienced you can say.
Every great has to have atleast 1 experienced player who is seen as a leader by his teammates... Pirlo in Juventus, Lahm in Bayern, Gerrard in Liverpool, Totti in Roma, Xavi in Barcelona, and list goes on.

Backen was way to underrated as a play maker. His ability to dribble was amazing as a defender, how he dashed and went by people was amazing. He barreled through tackles. Germany had one particularly good Midfielder but I forgot his name, he scored in a penalty in the final. He was a underrated player.
As I said before, that outside of the foot pass, just phenomenal. Linking lines, controlling the tempo of the game. Knowing when to play a safe pass or go for a hollywood pass.

That's Breitner. One of the most complete all-around players, his game is identical to Philipp Lahm's.

I always say, if Cruyff plays 1978, Holland most likely wins. Grant it, 1978 was also extremely corrupted with the Brazil problem and Argentina government issues. No way of telling, but he would have been in top shape and much better prepared.
Indeed, If only Cruyff didn't retire and Maradona was picked by the Argentinian manager!
Imagine how good that would have been. Maradona vs Cruyff in the final, goddamn.

Maradona's dribbling is out of this world. It's like putting Messi's pace-direction changing dribble + Ronaldo freestyle dribbling and multiplying it x10.
He can dribble anyone, anyone.

If it wasn't for the drugs and jail. Diego could have won 4 WCs.

1978: 16 years old, top scorer in the Argentinian league, yet he was snubbed. That's 1
1986: He won it. That's 2
1990: That was never a penalty, plus having a stadium booing the **** out of you for 90 minutes is no good. That could have been 3
1994: He said himself, if he continued playing in that tournament. Argentina would have won the cup. That's 4

Though Cruyff is my favorite of all time, he is revolutionized the game at a mental standpoint. I still believe, if he had won, just one WC, he goes down as the greatest of all time.
He was the first real false 9 the game have ever seen, he was a real team player, the kind of player I like the most.
Funny how people now consider Ronaldo and Messi to be the best 2 players of all time. I mean Messi barely makes it into my top 10, and Ronaldo isn't even in my top 25.

Also, I love how you did not say Pele. Too many people say he is the best. I mean, why is Garrincha not considered better O_O?
Pele is overrated.
Let's get this clear. He scored 757 official goals, played for 20 years in one of the weakest leagues in the world...
Before moving to FC Barcelona, Neymar scored 136 goals for Santos and he was just 20.

Won 3 WC with the greatest national team ever. Just look at his teammates, they would have won without him.
92 goals for Brazil which is going to be broken by Neymar in the future, and Neymar isn't even that good.

That's what I'm saying, you can add Gerson there too. One of the best playmakers and passers.
Garrincha is underrated, he was short, strong and very agile, he was basically a stump. You can never take the ball of him. incredibly creative to say the least.

Your list looks a lot like mine.

Cruyff (I'm biased :/, I won't argue if people switch Cruyff with Maradona or even Backen since he did beat him, personally those three can be put in any position and it would be hard to argue)
Maradona
Backen
Zidane
Who's your number 5 ? IMO it's Ronaldo, the Brazilian one.

Told you before Cooh, that Stamford bridge is the best place to take a nap.
Same at Old Trafford and Anfield. The atmosphere isn't the same anymore in general, I blame the ticket prices. Young people can't afford to go and watch their teams play every week. As I already told you, our away support is one of the best in the land and that's fact U_U

This also because your stadium management doesn't allow people to stand, start chants, bring banners. Stewards give warning to people standing up and they also are quite ban happy, so naturally no one will risk their season tickets.

Did you see the atmosphere in the Madrid game, that's the loudest a stadium have been in England this season.
Naturally, the away crowd is always better than the home crowd for any team, not only Chelski.

Seriously I never understand why Van Gaal never went for a good defender. I have to say, these is the worst United defense I had ever seen.

Nah, just kidding. United defenders are terrible indeed, LVG is searching hard for a quality defender.
The players aren't the problem IMO, he still can't find the winning formula. But he better stick with the 4-1-2-1-2 formation, it's quite solid, both on the offence and defense.

It was silent after the 3rd goal. The Madrid supporters were only heard by the end of the game.
Their chants are bad btw, it's either Cristiano! or Madrid!
