In his Adamantine Staff form, he becomes a virtually indestructible size-altering rod, being able to increase or decrease his length and width at a moment's notice and a swing from him easily smashes through trees.
Even while in this form, he can still see and converse with Hiruzen, as well as extend parts of his body out from any area of the rod's surface to attack or defend

His durability in this form makes him an excellent shield. He can also make copies of himself that interlock into an impenetrable cage.

But yes, he is an amazing tag-team partner and his rod form is a strong and versatile weapon.

The staff is initially described as a pillar of black iron twenty feet in height and the width of a barrel. It is only when Monkey lifts it and suggests that a smaller size would be more manageable that the staff complies with his wishes and shrinks. This is when Sun sees that the weapon is banded with a gold ring on each end, as well as the inscription along the body reading "The Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod. Weight: thirteen thousand five hundred [catties]". The inscription indicates that the staff follows the commands of its owner, shrinking or growing to their whim, and that it is immensely heavy, weighing 17,550 lbs (7,960 kg). When not in use, Monkey shrinks it down to the size of a needle and keeps it tucked behind his ear.

While Tobirama nicknamed Hiruzen "Monkey," which is what Sun Wukong was often called, Hiruzen himself seems to be loosely based off of Sasuke Sarutobi, a popular Japanese folktale of a boy who was raised by monkeys and became the world's greatest ninja. He was always referred to as simply "Sarutobi" for much of the series, then it was revealed that "Sarutobi" was his surname, which lead me to speculate that his fist name may had been "Sasuke." But, it was finally revealed that his first name was Hiruzen, but his father was Sasuke Sarutobi!
