if you look at it from that angle, most of what you call "failures" would look like impressive feats (fighting an enraged 4tailed Kyuubi without his arms is no joke, six tails was kicking Pain's ass and Pain was using insane justu).

Orochimaru discovered Actually discovered Ryūchi cave, nit Kabuto. Kabuto was only able to enter sage mode because he had Orochimaru's powers, and a young healthy body. Technically the third didn't beat him. In a sense even though Orichimaru lost his arms he came out alive while the third died, so I'd say the victor would be the one living.
