NOTE: This isn't Character Bashing, just an analysis based on manga facts. Plus, Oro's one of my top 10 faves.
Orochimaru has failed in most, if not all, of his endeavors.
Orochimaru is just a failure. Sure, he's accomplished some things, but they are far outnumbered by his failures.
Kabuto has had equal, if not more, success than him in a short period of time.
Obito has had more success than him:
Madara has had much more success than him (too many successes to list).
Orochimaru is the best evil villain in the NV, but he loses some cool points due to failing in almost all of his major appearances.
This is why sometimes, the whole concept of Orochimaru being the final villain seems bland and even impossible at times; he has just failed too much to be taken seriously, imo.

- Couldn't beat Hiruzen and destroy the Leaf; lost the ability to use ninjutsu.
- Couldn't recreate a full-potential Mokuton in Yamato (Yamato only uses plank wood, not living trees like Hashi).
- Couldn't beat Tsunade and Jiraiya (this one isn't so bad, but it's still a failure).
- Couldn't do anything impressive against Kyuubi Naruto.
- Couldn't steal Itachi's body; got fodderized by Itachi.
- Couldn't learn Snake Sage Mode (due to his body; still a failure).
- Couldn't steal Sasuke's body the first time; got defeated in his own dimension (this one really leaves me *smh*).
- Couldn't steal Sasuke's body again; got fodderized by Itachi again.
Orochimaru is just a failure. Sure, he's accomplished some things, but they are far outnumbered by his failures.

- Discovered Ryuchido by himself in a very short period of time.
- Captured Yamato.
- Enhanced the White Zetsu Army's strength with the Hashi cells in Yamato.
- Learned Snake Sage Mode.
- Used a large-scale Edo Tensei with many powerful resurrections.
- Actually convinced Obito to accept his help.
Obito has had more success than him:
- Fooled the whole Shinobi world into thinking he was actually Madara.
- Launched a more successful attack against the Leaf.
- Indirectly killed the Fourth Hokage without losing his arms.
- Manipulate Sasuke like a puppet.
- Defeated Konan and obtained the Rinnegan.
- Started the Fourth Great Shinobi War.
- Revived the Juubi.
- Became the Juubi's jin.
