No, sociopaths lack empathy. Psychopaths however, do whatever they think is necessary to get what they want. Doesn't mean they lack empathy.
No sorry but you are wrong. I searched the internet for many sources of those two disorders and all they had in common was this:
- "Both psychopaths and sociopaths lack a moral compass. They are generally incapable of sympathizing with the feelings of others, and lack the set of ethics that tend to keep society from dissolving into a chaotic mess where everyone only looks out for themselves. They also have a non-existent or impaired sense of disgust, meaning they are able to look at things that would make another person turn away." ..
- "Both a psychopath and a sociopath have a complete disregard for the feelings and rights of others. "....
- "Both are antisocial personality disorders (ASPD); lack of empathy or conscience"...
So my main point still is that Itachi's caring for his village and love for his brother is essential for determining his personality. He isn't a psychopath because psychopath puts his own interest in front of everyone elses. What he did for Sasuke is the opposite of what a psychopath would do.
I agree though he is a cold, calculating person. But when doing things for the greater good and when the motives are essentially helping his loved ones, do you call that person a psychopath?
As I said earlier he is unique person with higher than average emotional and analyzing skills, which leads him to be a victim of the enviroment and to suffer the consequences of being able to make hard decision in the shinobi world.
If you for example compare Obito and Itachi, then we would see that in the end Obito did everything for himself with no regard for anyone else's well being. He completely lost his attachements to the world he is living and just wanted to destroy it, the way it was existing.
Itachi on the other hand had his villages and brothers interest in mind, in every hard decision he made.
So I still don't agree 'cause to me a very intelligent person who can turn off his emotions to do the actual right thing isn't the same as psychopath.
EDIT: I looked up more detailed info of what psychopathy as a disorder actually consists of. And as conclusion these are the points I found that disagree with your theory:
Pyschopaths are:
1. Extremely self-centered. - As been said. Is someone who puts his villages and brothers well being ahead of his own, a self-centered person?
2. Show no remorse or guilt toward their victims. - Itachi crying after the massacre vs Obito not giving a f*ck for anyone.
3. Psychopaths are always blaming other people for their actions. - Itachi carried the consequences of his actions on his shoulders and knew it was what he had to do and he's the one who has to live with it. Unlike Obito who blames Kakashi and the rest of the world for his misery.
4. Psychopaths are very deceptive and tend to lie continuously. - Not counting the double agent time of Itachi's life, he was actually pretty straightforward with people and always told the truth. Let's see Obito: pretended to be Madara. Lured Itachi into his plan and deceived him like the rest of the world of his true identity.
