Naruto fanfic: A future without you, chapter sixteen
HINATA'S POV [ONE OF THE HOKAGE BUILDINGS MANY SECRET ROOMS]
Everyone was becoming impatient. That is, everyone excluding Sasuke and Hinata.
Anbu had gathered the Konoha 12 into a single, hidden room via reverse summoning. Their team captains, including Kakashi-sensei, weren't included. All they had been told was that they would get to see Naruto again, so for the first few minutes, no one complained.
Now everyone, even cousin Neji, had furrowed brows.
Hinata leaned over to him, curious.
"What is it, lady Hinata?" He asked without looking at her.
"Neji, I was wondering why you were here? Aren't you on guard duty for the rest of the month?" She asked.
"I am. However... I want to confirm something." He replied.
"Confirm what?" Sasuke asked, joining in on the conversation.
"...That he is still himself, without his memories." Neji answered.
"You're doubting him?" Sasuke challenged.
"Aren't you?" Neji countered.
Sasuke mulled this over, then met Neji's eyes. "No."
"He was traveling with an unknown, paranoid, cautious and strict body of entities. For all we know, they could have brainwashed him." Sai said, defending Neji.
Sakura whirled to face him, furious. "Sai! How could you?"
He held his hands up in defense. "I'm only being logical."
"But Naruto's personality doesn't apply to normal logic." Shikamaru pointed out.
"We're not talking about his personality." Neji said matter-of-factly. "We're discussing his mind."
"But he's only under a jutsu!" Lee said, hopeful. "If we break it--"
"He'll die." Ino reminded him. "Remember what Lady Tsunade said? His brain activity would cease. He'd be a vegetable."
"Nobody's asking you. BE QUIET." Sasuke ordered, causing Ino to recoil as if she were curling up in a hole to die.
"Why are you snapping at her so much?" Kiba asked. "You've been at her throat all day. It's not as if it's her fault Naruto fell off that cliff. It was you and Sakura who--"
"Kiba, I was there too." Hinata placed her hand over her heart. "Are you going to blame me?"
Kiba flinched, like he'd been slapped. His face turned as red as a tomato and he looked away, ashamed.
"I don't care what any of you think." Sakura declared. "None of you know him like I do."
"You don't know him at all." Sasuke said.
Everyone looked at him as if he'd just become suicidal. But Sakura looked hurt rather than angry.
"Of course I do! Just because you're his best friend doesn't mean you know everything about him!"
"I know him more than you do." Sasuke was glaring up at them all from behind his hair. "You're just upset that he's not your little ego-boost anymore. Now all you have is dog-brow to gush all over you. Naruto doesn't even have you on his radar. You're superfluous."
Sakura slapped him.
"He was NEVER just an ego boost Sasuke!" She yelled. "Quit getting angry at us and blaming us for your problems!"
Sasuke appeared to let this sink in.
"You should stop posing. I see through you."
Sakura pointed at his eyes. "Don't be so full of yourself. Even with the sharingan there are things you can't see! Things Naruto never lost sight of. But that's fine! It's okay to be upset Sasuke! It's okay even if he had changed! We were all changed by this! We can still make things like they were before!"
"Things will never be like they were before." Hinata told her. "But... But when we in that house together, when I was trying to be kind and careful with him, he seemed to relax, and enjoy himself around me. I think it was being in his parents house. It calmed him down."
"No."
Hinata looked up. Sasuke was speaking to HER now.
"That was your doing." He said. "You had a calming effect on him."
Her eyes widened. Was he really speaking so respectfully to her? That anti-social Uchiha-kun?
The door opened, and they all froze as Naruto and Tsunade walked in. Well, lady Tsunade walked in. Naruto stomped in after her.
"What do you mean Uri can't come with me?!" He asked.
"I TOLD you! We're holding him for questioning!" She answered.
"He's with that Ibiki guy isn't he? 'Cause I could have a word with him!" Naruto punched his palm.
"Ibiki doesn't scare that easily, you fool." She rolled her eyes at him.
"Watch me!" He snapped, and turned to head back out the door just as it slammed shut.
"Let me out!" He banged on the door with his fist.
"It's pointless." Tsunade crossed her arms. "You're not leaving this room until you pick four people to go with you to Uzushio."
"You stinking old--" Naruto started screaming again when Hinata spoke up.
"Naruto-kun."
He instantly lost all rage and demands and met Hinata's eyes. She DID have a calming effect on him.
"Oh, it's you." He said, staring blankly at her. "What're you doing here?"
"I'm a ninja." She told him for the third time.
Naruto made a "pfft" sound, puffing his cheeks out and crossing his arms. "You seem more like a housewife."
Kiba was upset, as if Naruto had insulted her. But Hinata simply blushed, happy that he had said "housewife" and not "maid."
"So, what, I just pick from these people?" Naruto pointed, annoyed.
"Yes." Tsunade nodded.
Naruto pointed at Sasuke. "Then him. He's coming."
The way he said that made Hinata nervous. Like Naruto was challenging Sasuke.
"Whoo." Sasuke said sarcastically, earning a questioning look from Sakura.
"And her too!" Naruto pointed at Hinata, not an ounce of hostility in his voice now. "And... Him and her... I guess."
He had gestured to Kiba and Hinata.
"That was quick." Tsunade put her hands on her hips. "You sure about this?"
Naruto's eyes burned like fire--a familiar, nostalgic sight for everyone present.
"Yep!"
"Okay then. Uri's already granted one of my requests. It's safe for you to walk through the village now."
Tsunade watched the door open, with an Anbu entering, carrying a ninja pack. "He wanted me to give that to you. He said it contains scrolls, a map, medicine, and supplies."
Naruto must have believed that, since he ushered it onto his back in a hurry.
But what did lady Tsunade mean by it was safe to walk through the village?
