obito isn't even radiating chakra (note that you can't see nature chakra normally but we did see it when naruto attacked the path that can absorb ninjutsu) and his eyes did not transform into the rinnegan so my best bet would be that he simply wants to look like the sage.. there even was a "poof" when he transformed.. maybe its the same kind of thing as naruto's sexy jutsu.
and the rod is obviously made of that black stuff ^.^

i didn't mean it as a sfx, i ment more the actual smoke around him when he transformed.
it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't have that much controll over his zetsu side, especially now with his little coup vs madara.

Or maybe the horns are more related to the balance inside the Jinchuuriki between his capacity to Love and to Hold power.

As for Love, Obito passed to the stage of hatred long time ago.
