Genjutsu or Illusionary techniques are like ninjutsu that utilizes ones chakra to attack and opponent. However genjutsu attacks ones mind by causing a disruption in there chakra flow causing a disruptio in there senses. Genjutsu makes one belive threw the ilusion that one passes extreme pain.
Genjutsu, or "Illusionary Technique" are techniques to be used in battle, similar to Ninjutsu and Taijutsu for example.
By executing a genjutsu, the user must use their chakra and sometimes hand-seals. So it's very similar to ninjutsu, in terms of use in combat. The big difference however, is that genjutsu attacks the opponents mind, instead of it's body(like ninjutsu does).
By manipulating the chakra flows in the opponents brain/mind, genjutsu sets it's purpose. It put strains on one's mind, and senses. Uses as blindness, confusion, mind control, infusing psychological pain etc is what genjutsu does.
Examples of good genjutsu users in the manga are:

Okay, now both of you tell me ways of getting out of a genjutsu and tell me how those work, in your own words.
Once can get out of a genjutsu by utilizing the technique Genjutsu Kai, Inflicting pain upon himself/herself to awake from the ilusion, by making a chakra disruption in there body. In the manga and anime we saw that another way is have someone help you by placing there hands upon the affected person and giving them there chakra. A sharingan user can see past genjutsu.
It is very usefull as well to have a summoning out in the battle. They can easily snap one out of it.
If not, then as Klaus said "Kai" is essential. From what i know, the strongest type of Genjutsu can't be broken through a "Kai" though. When it comes to forbidden genjutsu, fuuinjutsu and damaging yourself is two ways you might be abler to escape it though. Summonings can use "Kai" to wake you up from S-ranked Genjutsu and lower.

Alright, you blue people, let's start with some actual jutsus.
( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique

Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)

Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.
Focus your chakra and use it to cast a genjtusu over an area. The opponent, being in this area, will be affected and see what you want them to see in terms of manipulation of your surroundings. You can, for example, make the air red, the grass purple and whatever more you can think of. Use your imagination, blue people.

As I hear what Leaf sensei says I gather chakra and concentrate it. Then I release my chakra into the atmosphere and use it to create an ilusion that affects anyone in the near area. Then I picture dead trees with bodies hanging on them, the area around is on fire, I make human birds and bird dogs. 
Then I see Skorm hugging a tree filled with fear.

As i manipulate the small genjutsu world in Klaus's consciousness, i change the ground to lava and make a red stone appear in the middle of the flow. This grips Klaus with fear and he starts jumping in the air constantly.*

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape

Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.
Perform five handseals and use your chakra to trap your opponent into this genjutsu. The opponent will, once trapped, see you dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. Not knowing what is happening to them, they watch the petals surround them and blocking their vision. Whilst their vision is blocked, you of course can easily attack them because they won't know you're coming, unless you smell really bad or make too much noise!
As I hear instructions from Leaf sensei, I perform the necessary hand seals, and trap Skorm into my genjutsu. As he is trapped I block his vision and move quickly behind him. Then I take a kunai and hold it against his back.

*Alucard starts mounting up his chakra. At this point, he doens't really need to excel it as it is a D-rank jutsu.
As Alucard gather up his chakra, he quickly performs five handseals in a perfect and smooth motion. The jutsu traps the helpless Klaus.
As the chakra is transformed into his mind, i know control his senses. This genjutsu in particular, is meant to confuse, blinding, distracting and misleading the opponent. Ideal genjutsu to perform if you want to save chakra, but still create a pretty usefull genjutsu.*
As Klaus now is trapped by the genjutsu Alucard performed, Klaus starts to shiver. He's running around with his hands in the air like he was blindfolded. He also looks extremely confused and stumbles upon himself. This view is epic

I make a single hand seal and as heard from Leaf sensei, I trap a clone of myself in a genjutsu, by doing this he see's a another clone of myself head towards (not noticing its a paper bomb). Then as it reached my clone it explodes destroying it.
*Alucard starts mounting up a rather small(considering the rank of the jutsu) portion of chakra. He then creates an extremely simple clone of himself. He then performs a single handseal, which traps his clone. He then throws a paper bomb towards his clone. As the clone is confused within the genjutsu, it starts moving towards the paper bomb(thinking it's another clone). The bomb then explodes, and the clone vanishes.*

Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.
Use your chakra to trap the opponent in a genjutsu where it seems for them numerous illusionary clones of yourself emerge from everything around them. As the opponent attacks them, they will multiply. If you co-ordinate your attacks with the clones, it will look like they are performing the techniques, making the opponent think they are real.
(Small side note, I am on holiday from today until the 31st. This means that the training is even slower than before. My apologies for the inconvenience.)

As I hear the instructions by Leaf sensie, I concentrate my chakra and use it to create an Illusion that makes my friend Skorm, see clones of myself appear all around him from trees to grass etc. Then I begin to coordinate my attacks with that of the illusionary clones making Skorm think they are real. I then ssit back and enjoy the show.
