Proof that Hashirama was under Madara's Genjutsu

I am now quite certain that Hashirama was under a genjutsu:

This is the common anime/manga sparkle effect trope for mesmerization/illusion.

You must be registered for see images

Hashirama was placed on a Genjutsu, that is why Madara survived.

That sparkle effect appears whenever a character is surprised by something sudden. It doesn't necessarily prove Hashirama was under Genjutsu.

Plausible, but the spark shows when a character is shocked or surprised/startled. I'll have to go back in the chapter and check this out.

I´m not sure about the "diamond sparkle" thingy being exclusive to scenes where genjutsu is applied in Naruto manga but it´s true that the scan you posted of Naruto involves that, so it may be the case.

I rarely see that sparkle effect in the Manga tbh and it usually involves a scene with the Sharingan
