I agree with the storm trooper analogy. Supposedly the best but when it comes down to cannon plot they are just cool looking pawns that mean nothing in the greater context

ANBU also resemble the Aurors from the Harry Potter series (particularly one named Dawlish who gets humiliated in multiple books). Always getting outwitted and outdueled by everyone they run into. Initially, HP books made out the Aurors to be elite dark wizard hunters capable of giving Voldemort a run for his money but time and time again, they were thwarted by both the Death Eaters and Order of the Phoenix.

Well first, they're not in the ranking system, but only the most elite of ninja can join the Anbu. Also, they're sickeningly underrated.
Question, who have they been shown fighting? S-Rank Akatsuki members? Exactly my point.

The anbu are far stronger than any ordinary jounin. In fact, Anbu are specially picked because of special talents that they possess above the ordinary fodder in the village.

Those saying Asuma, Kurenai, etc are better than Anbu clearer have no clue what they're talking about.

Kakashi - Ex Anbu, shits on every jounin in the village, and was in fact called for kage
Itachi - Nothing more needs to be said
Fuu - He and torune were among the very few people who've ever hit obito. Guess who else hit obito? Hokage-Minato, S Class-Konan and a combination of Jin naruto, Jin Bee, Hokage select kakashi and Jounin guy. Fuu's abilities alone laugh at the other jounin in the village
Torune - Same as above. Once he removes his clothes, you're dead if you ever engage in taijutsu
Yamato - He shits on every jounin in konoha bar Kakashi. Nothing more needs to be said.
Sai - Easily one of the strongest members of K12
Orochimaru - Ex Anbu


Because NAruto and Sasuke, who are 2 genin, some how surpassed every single ninja in the show, that doesn't mean that the anbu failed. So, because they couldn't protect the hokage from an ex-anbu, ex-root, ex-akatsuki, hokage-select with a Jin at his disposal and 4 Genetically altered lackeys, the anbu now suck? Ok then...

I dunno.

On both occasions where Hokage candidates were being considered for the Leaf Village, on neither occasion was a current member of the ANBU among the selections. Kakashi was the only ANBU alumni to have his name thrown in the ring but his skills by then were far better than when he had served in ANBU years before.

If ANBU members were as strong as some people made them out to be, nobody would have wasted time trying to track down Tsunade when they needed another Hokage.

Skillswise, the average ANBU probably falls somewhere around the level of Hayate Gekko or later day Kiba. Exceptional ones are the exception.
