Guy for himself has shown no tracking feat has too much of a loud style, he would get spotted too quick.
The ANBU are also selected as being the most trustworthy considering their position and knowledge of the villages secrets.
The only time the ANBU were able to show their true powers, they were up against the summoning of effing Pain that gave even Jiraiya trouble >.>

I agree they are all like chunin level..Its so annoying how they get called elite whenever you see their bodies covered in blood every time a fight happens lmao.
They're fodder because they work behind the scenes so they don't get screen time. Plot has them dying left and right. Just like plot killed 4th Kazekage with a simple stab through the chest.
The anbu are strong, I sure there are a bunch of ninja like kakashi, gai, and itachi, but since non of the main characters are in anbu, it dosent show them much, but as they say, anbu is the highest ranking division, they partake in S-rank missions all the time, who else does?
ANBU aren't supposed to really show off their power; they work from shadows. Village mostly uses them for protection, spying and assassinations. So basically, saying they're weak, makes no sense. Being strong has got many meanings.
However, considering current power-scales, they might seem fodders, but I repeat: comparing them to others makes no sense. Their job is not to catch tailed beasts or to change landscapes with OP jutsus - they work silently within the shadows for the sake of their village.
