Why do they say anbu black ops is the best

They always say in naruto that anbu are the elite? I'm pretty sure the top ninja in the village (excluding sonnin/hokage) are like guy, kurenai, and r.i.p asuma. Kakashi is a former one so he makes it more confusing.The way I see it, the ANBU are like the special jonin. They're really good at one thing, which in their case is probably assasination, stealth, seals, spying or stuff like that. The jonin are obviously better than them, only having the Kage and jonin commander/head ninja (konoha/kumo) above them.

The Anbu have to be bad, if they were very effective at their jobs, the story would have no conflict. They been portrayed as too weak though when this shouldn't really be the case

Aren't jounin placed underneath the ANBU? I'm not sure of the order, but I thought it was like that.
Well, the ANBU are the ones they call in for assassinations and other secret missions. Because they usually get all the S ranked missions, it's assumed they are one of the strongest divisions (for lack of a better suited word) in a village.
Plus it's not that easy to become an ANBU, which heightens their reputation - or something like that *shrugs*
But Kishimoto-sensei kind of screwed them up by killing them off quickly :/

its called plot but they r not weak as for keepign the 3rd safe kakashi failed at that orochi shows up and makes and a threat and u back down/ itachi was anbu and look at him all those jounin failed to stop pain tobi kurama etc. there speciaty is stealth assassination and plotting not protecting but in this case the whole leaf failed not just the anbu

The anbu black ops are elite kakashi and itachi was apart of them and they are elite.

They can't be good because of plot, do you think kishi would let the anbu solve everything? he has to leave it for the main characters not random people in masks.

The show never gave us any information on the anbu. I just thought they were a covert ops team for the leaf.
