I think he meant it in the sense that shinobi are not meant to have attachments. not even to their brothers. They are not brothers, they are just fellow shinobi and clansmen

No, then he'd say now he only has one, you're looking at this too bluntly.
I think that Izuna may not have been his blood brother, like how Naruto would consider sasuke his "brother". Madara and Izuma may have met later on and become close, and the term "brother" is purely symbolic.

No, Izuna was Madara's blood brother. If he wasn't then Madara would not have gotten the EMS (or rather not one as strong) after implanting Izuna's eyes into himself

Had four brothers, three of them died, 1 brother left which was Izuna. Common sense.

What he meant by that is he used to have 4 brothers, but now he has either less or more since he "had" 4. Most probably, he has less brothers now. "Had" in that sense still holds.

I think most people of this forum dont have any kind of patience. How can in just a 5 minutes talk between hashi and madara everything could be reveled. The next chapters are gonna answer each one of the doubts. So posting threads about Izuna or something related to them is just a waste.
And it was pretty obvious that madara was just trying to assure hashi that he is not alone in the world who is dealing with pain of loss by stating he also had 4 brothers which were killed in war.now cant he have 5 brothers or even more than that....

Saying had does not mean all of them are dead. For example I had five dollars now I have two. People should quit looking for mistakes and focus on the story

He is not saying they all died. Only some of them.

It's not as complicated as you're making it and No Kishi didn't make a mistake.

Madara had 4 brothers when he says this we can assume 8-10 years old. Hashi's relative just died at 7 years old. It never says all his brothers are dead just that he HAD 4 brothers before that conversation happened. Maybe 2 of them died and he and Izuna we're the only ones left to reach their 20's. And if it did mean all 4 had died then that would mean Madara had 5 brothers counting Izuna and the 4 dead ones, but as I said it just means some of his brothers died young as well.

If he had 4 brothers and two died, he would no longer haver 4.

Just because he said he had 4 brothers, doesn't mean they all died.

This.....

IF you had 4 apples and I take 3, do you still have 4?

edit I know alot have said this sorry

i think he means that he had 4 brothers before and 1 of them is izuna, so i think he means that 3 of his brothers died.

I cant believe this discussion actually went on to multiple pages.

On side note, Hashirama said "My little brother was killed." Now I thought Tobirama was his little brother too. Since he said "my little brother was killed" instead of "one of my little brothers was killed" It must mean that tobirama is not his real brother.

Did you see what I did there? If you misinterperate things things, you can spin in any way you want.

There was no translation error. Madara "HAD" 4 brothers at one point before one or more of them were killed. We know that Izuna lived past that age, so at most 3 of his brothers had died at that point.

I hope we can lay this to rest as a reader misinterpretation

Exactly. I'm amazed that there are so many different interpretations of that statement. Seems pretty clear he means exactly what he said: he doesn't have 4 brothers anymore, but 1, 2, or 3.

I'm gonna say all four of Madara's brother's died. Afterwards, Izuna was born, and Madara trained him so well so he would have a longer lifespan than the previous 4 that passed away.

I'm assuming this means that one or two of Madara's brothers were already dead when him and Hashirama had this conversation. This adds on to the reasons why Izuna was so important to him...he was Madara's last remaining brother

There's nothing wrong in the translation. Madara is still acting as a shinobi of those times who will never reveal any truth to anyone. I mean he's not telling the truth..... atleast not yet. He still don't know much about Hashirama.
But they both have the same goals in order to prevent the killing activities.
Here's the proof: first panel in the middle

This tells that Hashirama knew about the relationship between Madara and Izuna. That also means Hashirama met Izuna.
