Hey.

I was just wondering if someone else could explain this part of the Manga to me:

Code:
[color="red"]Madara:[/color] I have four brothers...
[color="red"]Madara:[/color] Or rather, I [b]had[/b] four brothers.

Madara clearly states that he had four brothers. Using "had" implies that he doesn't anymore (at that point in the flashback), while the topic of conversation between Madara and Hashirama at the time was about siblings dieing, so ultimately, it's safe to jump into the conclusion that Madara's four siblings had also died. Now, we don't know who all of his four siblings were, but we do know that Izuna was one of them.

However, how could all of Madara's four siblings have died such a long time ago, when clearly, Izuna was alive long after that:

NarutoWiki said:
Eighty years prior to the start of the series, Izuna and his older brother Madara were said to be equals as the most gifted members of the Uchiha clan.

Quote-Result: They were considered top of the Uchiha later on, not at the current point in the flashback of the manga (You can even tell by the pictures, Izuna's far older than Hashi, Tobi & Madara are in the present-flashback), so logically speaking, Izuna isn't dead in the current flashback, yet, Madara stated that all of his four siblings died as well.

And by this, I wan to ask the actual question:

1. Is this just a mistake by Kishi?
2. Could Madara & Hashirama be referring to their whole respective "Clan" as "Brothers" instead of their actual Siblings, Since that would make the statements more valid?
3. Explain

I'm assuming the 2nd option is the real one, I just want to hear what you guys think about it. I'd personally guess they're referring to their whole clan as brothers, but then again, surely more than 4 Uchihas (Madaras "brothers") had died up until this point as well, so it's rather strange, still, which makes me still believe that Madara was in fact referring to actual siblings, in which case it's wrong.

Maybe number 2 but also a mistranslation?

If he had 4 brothers and two died, he would no longer haver 4.

Just because he said he had 4 brothers, doesn't mean they all died.

Even if only 1 of the brothers died he still would have "had" 4, why on earth did you think he meant all of them had died?

if you have four brother and lose one then you can say i had four brouthers he just did not finishand say now i have one or two Its apparent if you read the manga that Izuna lives for some time beyond this flash back

"Had four brothers" could mean he lost some of them. Meaning, two may have died or something along those lines. The past tense is still suited to that phrase, because he no longer has exactly four brothers.

Madara merely stated he had 4 brothers. Since when does that necessarily imply all four of them died?

At the very least we can deduce at least one of them died.

2 things: Either they only mentioned Izuna because he was actually strong and grew old enough to be worth mentioning, while all of Madara's other brothers died young, or its some kind of wierd mistranslation. The first one seems more plausible.

Just had an idea. What if madara and Izuna killed those 2 brothers to get the mangekyou sharingan? Just a thought...

Had means at least one is dead or somehow gone, yes, that much is true. But there's no reason not to comprehend his statement in the form that all of them were/are dead. Why? Because he didn't specify how many brothers he has currently. So either way, the Manga is, as usual, not clear on statements made.

If someone were to ask me
- Do you have any siblings?
I'd reply with
- Yeah, I have three brothers. Well, I had. One of them died in the war.
not
- Yeah, I have three brothers. Well, I had.

See what I mean? This is why the Manga is so unclear.

No, then he'd say now he only has one, you're looking at this too bluntly.
I think that Izuna may not have been his blood brother, like how Naruto would consider sasuke his "brother". Madara and Izuma may have met later on and become close, and the term "brother" is purely symbolic.

Actually, I think he just means several of his brother have died. Izuna must still be alive, simply because his connection to his brother has played such a huge role in the story.
Izuna might still be mentioned, or even be shown, since Hashirama's flashback isn't over yet.

Don't read too much into it, it's not an analogy of some sort to the ninja or shinobi clans.
