General question is, which kind of clone is the strongest. For what we have seen are:
-wood clone (Hashirama, Madara, Yamato)
-shadow clone (Naruto, Hiruzen, Kakashi, Itachi)
-lighting clone (Kakashi)
-water clone (Zabuza and some chuunin exam fodders)
IMO water clone is the weakest as it has only 1/10 strength of the user: (bottom left pannel)
We only saw lighting clone during Kakashi vs Pain fight
It has a good effect of paralyzing the enemy with some Raiton when dispersed. Some people say that it used half of Kakashi's chakra but that's wrong. Kakashi said that after a couple of raikiris, doton techs, raiton dog and raiton bunshin he had half chakra.
As to shadow clone- we have seen it more than enough with Naruto using it. Most people will say it is a fodder tech because in almost every Naruto fight he used it 100+ and were easily dispersed. We mustn't forget they divide chakra evenly among clones. Right now Naruto can make at least 3 bijuu clones and about 15 KM clones. When he was fighting Kurama he had maany SM clones:
Bottom panel we se amount of clones which then entered SM. Also, Hiruzen's shadow clones were even able to perform RDS. He only made 2 because of his chakra levels- was pretty old back then. But they managed to stop Hashirama and Tobirama in their movements and then seal them.
One can say that Madara has seen through the clones recognizing the real one. I think we can say that only EMS allows you to see that person is a clone (wood or shadow). Itachi didn't know that this Naruto is not a clone (when he was giving him KA). Sasuke while going to kill Itachi, dispersed one clone not knowing it was actually a clone. Obito never recognised also (f.e. Naruto & Kakashi & Gai & Bee vs Obito). But only Madara saw through Hashi's wood clones, but he had EMS back then:
Madara even stated shadow clone technique as a really pro tech:
We only saw wood clones when Madara used them and as an edo he has unlimited chakra and that's why he could make so many of them (as Uchiha he doesn't have chakra amount as Naruto or Raikage) and because of this unlimited chakra every one of them could use Susannoo.
And he only used them, because of some mysterious affect toward Hashirama and his wood. Through the battle with kages he only used Susanoo and Mokuton actually, and maybe some fire techs. It's not like he doesn't know how to use shadow clone, nor did he say that wood>shadow clone.
We haven't seen Hashirama's wood clones, so we can only guess.
What I aim is to say, that whichever clone is used, its strength is based on the actual user strength but which would be better if for example Madara used one wood clone and one shadow clone and made them fight?
