Basic Information
Name: Zuko
Nickname: The Blue Spirit
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Clan: N/A

Looks:

Zuko is a young man with a fair skin complexion. He has a full head of somewhat shaggy hair that goes slightly over his face, part of it hanging in between his eyes and the rest of it framing the sides of his head. As a child, his face remained mostly unblemished, but after one certain accident he retained an eternal scar on around his left eye. This remains to be one of his most notable features, being the first thing that most people notice about him, being that the scar is quite large and covers about half of the left side of his face. His eyes have a somewhat golden color. Most often, his face remains stern, although recently, as his life has begun to sort itself out, he has taken to smiling, a somewhat content grin, more often. He has a muscular build for his age, and most often his garb consists of a red, sleeveless robe with a gold trimming that goes down near his knees. Under this robe, he wears a loose fitting short sleeve shirt, and somewhat loose fitting pants tucked into dark red, flexible boots.

Personality:

Short-tempered: For most of his life, Zuko has been a person who can be angered easily. Even upon becoming a “good guy,” so to speak, he is still subject to easily becoming annoyed. He is often frustrated by the prospect that he has been branded as a failure for the majority of his life.

Honorable: Despite being raised by in a village where the line between right and wrong his vague, Zuko has a genuine sense of morality. His morality has only grown after his banishment, being influenced greatly by his uncle. Though he often struggles with what he is told to do and what he believes is right, he does tend to make the moral choice the majority of the time.

Specialty:

Fire: Zuko’s most natural elemental affinity is that of fire, having grasped the basics of the element as a young boy, and later on mastering the element within a short amount of time.

Swordsmanship: Zuko has become highly efficient in his use of swords. He often carries around two Dual Dao Swords, capable of incorporating them smoothly in battle. These blades are Zuko’s weapons of choice, and he uses these in the majority of his battles. Among these swords, he has been known to utilize other weapons; however, these remain to be his weapons of choice. Whilst under his “Blue Spirit” persona, Zuko uses only these weapons, as to not create any leads whatsoever to his true identity, and yet still remains to be deadly to any who stand in his path.

Taijutsu: Along with his Kenjutsu, Zuko is also quite efficient in Taijutsu. He is a very quick and acrobatic fighter, having been able to send an opponent reeling back with a simple thrust of his palm, and being capable of confusing his opponents with quick movements. Combining his taijutsu along with his kenjutsu make Zuko a force to be reckoned with, whether he uses ninjutsu or not.

Background Info.
History:

Born as a joyful, determined, and somewhat indulged youth, Zuko’s life was to be nigh on royalty. The life that can only be dreamed of for most of us. The life of a monarch, the life of a king. Zuko would be a leader. He would grow up observing, learning all that he could from those around him, until finally he was ready himself. This was the life planned out for him from ages past.

But fate rarely retains such simplicity.

Nova, which is the village of Zuko’s origination; the village in which this tale begins. Nova was a unique village, separated all of the other supposed “Five Great Shinobi Villages,” and therefore a large target of most of these villages, specifically Konohagakure. For the village was situated within the Fire Country, far south of the Leaf Village, with large walls flanking all of its exposed sides; it’s back to the sea where its docks were set up. The village had cut off all relations to Konohagakure long ago, and had since begun plotting against the large and formidable village. Enacting these plans, though, would prove difficult, and would only get even more complicated when Madara Uchiha would come to declare war upon the Ninja World.

But that is getting far ahead of the story.

Three years prior to the Nine-Tails attack on the Hidden Leaf Village, Zuko was born into the long line of monarchs that ruled over the Village of Nova; his father being the notorious General Ozai. The monarchs were known for their great power, specifically over the usage of the fire element, as well as their great yearn for conquest; a borderline malicious yearn. Most of the southern areas of the Fire Country had already been colonized by Nova’s rulers, but the yearn for conquest did not only pertain to conflicts with the outside ninja world, but also to those within the village who participated in the race for power. The title of monarch was given to the eldest son, as was customary, which resulted in the “mysterious” deaths of the eldest sons of many past rulers, leaving their second child the next in line. Generals and soldiers would compete among one another as well, always seeking the upper hand. The village was both hurting and thriving by this bloodthirsty instinct held by most of its citizens, for the village received its income primarily from bounty hunting or, on more unofficial terms, assassinations. This power struggle is what made Zuko into the crowned prince.

When young Zuko was but seven years old, too young to understand any of the afore mentioned politics, his uncle suffered a terrible loss as the hands of the Fourth Raikage after an attempt at infiltrating the village. During this loss, Iroh, Zuko’s uncle and the General who was in command of the army leading this attack, lost his only son—a promising shinobi known as Lu Ten. Iroh fell into a deep state of turmoil and, as some people said, a supposed state of insanity. Ozai jumped on this opportunity without hesitation.

Iroh was the first born child of Nova’s current king, Ozai being a few years younger, and therefore he was heir to the throne. But with Lu Ten dead, and therefore with no successor, Ozai immediately went to his father and challenged Iroh’s birthright to the throne. The current monarch, furious with Ozai’s request, demanded that his son should feel the same pain that Iroh felt.

His eldest son, Zuko, would be executed.

And Ozai did not mind one bit.

Not much is known of what transpired the night of this request, but by morning, tragedy befell Zuko twofold.

His mother was gone, and Azulon, his grandfather and the then-holder of the throne, was proclaimed dead. And Zuko, for his part, would not find out until years later how or why any of this happened, not even having known that he had ever been ordered to be killed.
And Ozai took his place as the leader of Nova.

Time passed and the years went on with Nova becoming a dictatorship. As Zuko grew older, he was expected to begin learning his place in the nation’s politics. And as such, he was brought to a war meeting along with his father and several of Nova’s most highly acclaimed generals. The meeting was concerning a battle to be held with another minor village in the Lightning Country that had been attempting to overthrow Nova for several years. During this meeting, a general proposed an idea in which the army would send the most inexperienced members of their group up first in the battle, while their most experienced soldiers would launch the true attack as the novices would be slaughtered. Zuko, now at the age of fifteen, spoke out against the idea at once, seeing the cruelty involved in sending such dedicated soldiers out to die in such a dishonorable manner.

The room was silent for a long while, and the general immediately proclaimed that such an outburst issued disrespect, and such disrespect could only be mended by the humility of battle. Zuko readily accepted, not fearing the general at all.

It was only until the day of the battle, though, that Zuko realized that it was not the general whom he had disrespected.

By making such an outburst in the presence of the monarch of Nova, his father Ozai, his outburst disrespected not the general, but Ozai, and so on the day of the battle, Zuko was surprised and dismayed to see his father step out into the clearing, a stern look on his face, and demanding that his son fought him.

Zuko refused, bowing down immediately and begging not to fight his father. His father used but a single jutsu on him, a minor one simply to make his son fight him, causing a serious burn around his son’s eye that would follow him for the remainder of his life. Zuko still refused to fight, and Ozai, embarrassed by his son’s weakness, banished Zuko from Nova, giving him only one task that would offer redemption for him and give him a single opportunity to return. The task was a nearly impossible one, which Ozai never expected Zuko to be capable of completing.

He would have to see to the destruction of Nova’s greatest enemy—Konohagakure.

Zuko left the village the day after, with only one other man with him—the fallen-from-glory general Iroh. The two set out for Konoha soon, but Iroh had different plans for his nephew. From the start of this journey, he had joined Zuko in the hope that his nephew would “see the light,” so to speak, as Iroh had saw it years ago when his only son passed. When Zuko left though, he had every intention of finding this redemption, and as such, he took on the persona of the fear-inspiring Blue Spirit. Under this persona, Zuko would commit minor crimes, simply for food or for weapons, and depended solely on what he knew of kenjutsu and taijutsu while they travelled through the Fire Country. However, Zuko had more important plans for this Blue Spirit when they reached Konoha two months after his banishment.

Zuko had finally regained sight in his left eye by the time they reached Konoha, and the Blue Spirit, originally simply the perpetrator of minor crimes, became a terrorist in the village. Iroh shortly discovered Zuko’s alternate persona, but would not confront him, believing that Zuko needed time to figure out his life for himself.

And he began to do so.

When Zuko was not under the disguise of the Blue Spirit, he would examine the life of Konohagakure’s villagers; a life so much happier and peaceful than his own. Their lives intrigued him, and at the same time tormented him. He would often wonder what separated him from the others. The question was so obvious, yet the solution was so vague. Could he really simply drop everything that brought him here and attempt to adopt a normal life?

His answer to this, for a long time, was a state of denial and conclusion, and a completely loss of himself as he delved further into the arms of the Blue Spirit.

On one night, when the Blue Spirit was at his peak and when Zuko was, these days, rarely seen, Iroh confronted his nephew. He claimed that it was time that Zuko began considering his life, and what he wanted from it. What did he want though? The answer was simple, it was what anyone would truly want from their lives—happiness and honor. Iroh pleaded with his nephew to drop this ploy and settle for a simpler life in the village. His uncle never was truly in line with the ways of Nova, and now was the time for Zuko to acknowledge that he never was either.

The Blue Spirit was dropped and Zuko became a true member of Konohagakure, having been able to be accepted due to no one ever making the connection between him and the Blue Spirit... for now at least.

A year passed, with Zuko now a few months away from the age of 17, and his life took one more unexpected turn.

His sister, Azula, was coming to Konoha.

During the previous year, Zuko had become a rather anonymous ninja within Konohagakure, though he rose through the ranks rather quickly, becoming a jounin; his skills allowing him to skip to the rank of chuunin almost immediately. He was out on a mission, and while returning, still a few kilometers away from the village, Azula suddenly appeared in front of him.

Zuko braced for a fight, but instead he was offered something that was unexpected—redemption.

If he helped her take down Konohagakure, he would, after nearly two years, be able to finally return to his home in Nova. This was Zuko’s true moment to make his choice. Could he truly refuse her offer? Could he betray the village that he had become loyal to?

And suddenly, Zuko thought of his uncle Iroh, who had been more of a father than his own, and who had been more of a friend than anyone had in a long time.

At that thought, he attacked Azula, not willing to risk losing all that was now dear to him. A large battle ensued. Azula was the stronger, but Zuko now had something more than strength to drive him; he had something important to protect—his newfound life. The battle ended in somewhat of a draw, as Azula, in disbelief at her brother’s, who she had always been far more powerful than, strength. However, she did not leave without vowing to return, and next time with an army at the door of Konoha.

And so now Zuko lies in wait, keeping a close eye on his old village, not only awaiting, but welcoming the army’s return.
