It is possible that Madara is still alive after all this time but its also possible that hes dead.
In my opinion, Black Zetsu is mearly a creation of madara, which would explain why madara FULLY trusts him. Throughout the manga you read about madara controlling people and using them. He has used everyone except black zetsu; which he usually keeps at his side.
That being said, Madara created zetsu as a way to keep his legacy going. To continue his plan after he died. After the real Madara died, his ems lost its life force and returned to a regular 3 tomoe es. Soon after, zatsu consumed his eye and now takes the name of Madara.
This would also explain why Madara was able to use izanagi against konan. He required Senju(cell he took from last time he fought 1st hokage) and Uchiha(sharingan) blood. Thats why he was able to mix both dna so easily, because he is zetsu.
Also, the last coffin that kabuto opened contained madaras corpse. Kabuto made it clear that the person he revives has all their old abilities, such as itachi and nagato still having their eyes. So this real (undead)Madara has his EMS and knowledge to kill his creation Black Zetsu. That is why zetsu was so scared, he is the only person who knows how to kill him.
