If Itachi did not slaughter the Uchiha, then an uprising would've happened; killing many other clan innocents. Furthermore, other nations would've entered the fray and further death and destruction would've ensued. Then what would have happened to most of this sites' favorite characters? Death. They would've died as young innocents. So, yes, he did what most others couldn't have done: He truly put the village's needs above his family's. no it wouldnt. your too certain of the outcome. its easy to figure out a better solution than genocide. itachi could have his father assasinated and then blame it on madara or some other external threat, then take over himself as uchiha leader. or have shisui kill himself only after taking down fugaku and making himself the village enemy.

- tormented naruto for no reason
- tried to lump all his problems on narutos shoulders
- did nothing to stop orochimaru or danzo or pain. asuma and jiraiya died to get informaiton itachi should already have given them
- supported and trusted danzo who is a psychopathic murderous brainwashing thug.
- supported hiruzen who is a weak willed fool who let danzo and oro do whatever they wanted
- supported akatsuki and didnt even slow them down
- tried to brainwash and enslave sauske for eternity

right...and not one single uchiha was innocent? not one single uchiha was controlled or coerced into their actions? also if konoha was so set on sparing innocent lives why did they put uchihas into such a corner in the first place and blame them for something without any proof?
as the 4th shinobi world war proves, all you need to settle old grudges is a common enemy, and akatsuki could provide that. as could itachi. he never needed to kill a single soul, just prove himself to be a threat to both sides.
