I think people are missing the point.

Hiruzen seemed to copy what the statue was doing, and use the same jutsu(s) back at it. That's, to me, the OP or impressive thing. Being able to take a glance at whatever jutsu your opponent is using and replicate it without a blood line. At a quicker speed, too.
