I've probably seen this phrase at least 500 times here:

"Itachi is the deepest, most well written character on naruto, and maybe all of manga".

while i won't go into why thats not true and you are all just easily impressed but lack the eye for good literature to tell what a REALLY deep character is (there are few manga characters i'd call "deep" because manga typically isn't really "high level writing"), I'll save that for another day .

But you all ACTUALLY thought him being good was a big twist?

If you couldn't tell half way through part 1 that itachi was going to be a good guy, I can't really help you.

He spoke in riddles because 1) kishi didn't know the EXACT route he was going to take him and 2) he wanted to leave an opening for him to be a good guy.

People kept saying "why did he kill his family". It was such a vague story, it really should have been a red flag that we were missing something.

I was hoping for a big reveal or something, but in the end, "he's good". It really didn't wow me, but thats manga for you.

I'm just curious, did you all REALLY not know he was good? my 12 year old self thought it was fairly damn obvious :/

I liked Itachi's character and thought it was "deep" because it showed that the man had sinned to the upmost hightest level one could committ, but in the end there was one thing he couldn't do.

One person he had to save, out of them all ... his little brother.

I always figured Itachi did the things he did for a reason.

I believe he killed his clan and nurtured his brother's hatred in pursuit for a greater goal in the end. One that would shape the world.

That he'd be the last fight Sasuke would have to mirror whoever Naruto would be fighting in the end. "That Akatsuki leader".

So I was pretty surprised when he was only protecting his homeland and little brother.

But Itachi fans are going to pretty much scream, "2Deep4U"

As soon as he started to speak, it was clear.

To me he's just an interesting person. And well done for his archetype.

Itachi is is a bit better than Hitler...or maybe not because Hitler didn't kill his parents

I got into Naruto right before the Itachi vs Sasuke fight (I was late), and the truth about him was revealed to me before I was able to get the general "vibe" of his pre-reveal self. I remember not being surprised, but I have no idea how I would have reacted had I been reading it from the beginning.

Also, I remember many theories about Itachi being a good guy floating around back then. So again, no surprises there.

Then tell me, who is a better character?

Whether you 'knew' that he was good or not is irrelevant, doesn't make his character any worse

I couldn't tell back when I was however old I was. Though him being good didn't effect me, I really didn't care about him back then.
Now it's clear, but I think he's still a good character nonetheless.
