Just so's ya know; This is a KakaNaru story. So please, don't hate on it just because of the pairing... also, please forgive the poor quality. I started writing this when I was eleven. :|

Xenocide
Sometimes, being the youngest ANBU captain ever causes problems... especially if you fall in love with your subordinate...

Chapter 1: Failure

This was his first failure. Over eight years he’d been an ANBU, and yet this was his first fail. It was epic, too. After a long, drawn-out battle, the bastard enemy had shoved a katana between his ribs and run, laughing madly. He’d collapsed against this tree to await death, sure that the blood gushing from his wound would kill him.

But he didn’t die. His wound healed somewhat, at least scabbed over, and the blood stopped pouring. Though now and again he coughed up a copious amount, there was no sign of blood-loss besides a sort of paleness of his vision and his spinning head.

‘At least the sharingan is still working...’

He touched the scar over his left eye gently, remembering the day he’d gotten it. That was all he could do at the moment; remember, and hope he didn’t die, and hope no one thought less of him, especially not-

“Wolf.” He raised his head and stared.

‘Oh shit.’

His captain stood there, stern for a boy. Over his shoulder was thrown the lifeless corpse of the enemy. The captain glared at him, meeting him eye-for-eye.

“...You were a fool.” The boy growled, “You let him get through your defense. And don’t start that ‘I know that already’ routine. The last thing I want is for my best ANBU to start acting like a child.”

He quailed under the child’s intense stare. He wasn’t weak; everyone feared Kitsune, the captain of squad 6. Only about seven years old, and already, as strong and swift and in-control as Itachi at thirteen.

“Sorry, sir. Won’t happen again, sir.” He murmured, trying to stand. His scab cracked open, and he fell back as blood began again.

“D-damn it...” He muttered. A trickle of black blood ran from the corner of his mouth, and pain shot through him again. He grimaced and tried to stand again. His captain put a hand on his shoulder and gently shoved him down.

“Don’t kill yourself, idiot.” He said sternly, and crouched, letting the dead body roll to the forest floor. He placed a hand on the wound and concentrated. Yellow fire slowly formed into threads and sewed the two sides together, sinking into the skin, burning away infection and creating a seamless scar. Wolf smirked.

“You’re almost out of chakra too.” He murmured. Kitsune shrugged, a sort of ripple that went down his spine like a fox’s.

“Yes, well... after a year or two of this, I’ll be better at conserving my own chakra.” The boy looked up and grinned. Wolf blinked. He had never seen his captain smile. Not even to the Hokage.

“Right. That should hold.” The boy stood again, brushing off his knees. Wolf stood and slipped his ceramic mask back over his face. He stooped to pick up the body, but Kitsune slapped his hand away.

“Let’s just take his head.” He suggested, crouching and slicing the head off. Wolf closed his eyes for a minute. He could never get over the sight of blood spraying from a dead body. Kitsune straightened and looked straight at him.

“...Better get used to bleeding dead, Wolf. From what Hokage-sama told me, you’ve been an ANBU for about nine years and ten months. I’d think you were used to death.”

Wolf sighed. “I am. It’s just I’m not used to dead people bleeding all over. It’s... not natural, to me.”

Kitsune snorted. “Enough with the excuses. It doesn’t much matter anyway. Now come on. The others are getting impatient.”

Naruto scrubbed the last of the blood from his hair, troubled. He had smiled... he couldn’t remember smiling while on a mission for... for however long he’d been in ANBU. Had it really only been a year? Already he had a fiercer reputation than Itachi ever did...

But he’d smiled. That... couldn’t be right. He’d felt relieved that his best had been spared. He was proud of the man, though he was about fifteen years older than Naruto. Wolf was the best ANBU, period. Besides Naruto. But still... other captains didn’t feel so relieved to see their best. He knew that. And Wolf had been confused. Very confused.

And Naruto had been concerned when Wolf closed his eyes, swaying slightly. That shouldn’t have happened.

Naruto stepped out of the shower and sighed as the sending Kyuubi had created brought him a towel in its chakra-jaws. Sendings, though solid enough to touch, were simple creations of chakra and ancient marks Naruto knew, but couldn’t understand. Kyuubi, being a demon, knew them all.

The fox-sending waited until Naruto was dry before yipping Will that be all, Master?

Naruto smiled slightly and ruffled the sending’s faux furry ears. “Yes. Thank you, Kiiro.” The sending grinned and melted into the tiles, becoming just a glowing symbol.

“Awww, I wanted him to bring me blood!” Kyuubi whined.

‘If I’d told him to get blood, how would he do it?’

“Simple! He can kill, same as you! Although he doesn’t have school to get to...”

‘Shit!!!’

Naruto scrambled into his regular clothes and raced out the door, only halting to set the traps and order the sendings to kill any who didn’t say the right password.

Which would be everyone besides Naruto himself.

He ran through the streets, forcing his tired legs to carry him as fast as possible towards the school. People yelped and dodged, cursing him and all his descendants. He couldn’t help but grin. This was always fun, and he had to get out all his childish energy. He might have been tired, but he was still a young boy, and he still had to laugh as he raced to school, sure that he’d get through the day easily.

This mission was much too easy. Now, ANBU missions were a challenge. Simply because Kakashi could never figure them out. Well, not the missions themselves; just his captain.

He sighed as he waited for his charge to finish up the buying. Usually it was rich merchants and royalty he protected; today it was some stupid rich-y rich kid and his rich-y rich nana.

“Nana, I want that!” The boy whined, tugging on the woman’s hand. She glanced at Kakashi as if to say “Sorry he’s so annoying” and turned to the boy.

“But Jeremiah, are you sure you will want it for long? You bought that teddy at home and gave it to your sister when it got dirty.”

“That’s ‘cause that was from home!” The boy said disgustedly. Kakashi sighed and tried to work on the puzzle of his captain. Unfortunately, the boy heard him and turned to say something. Then he blinked.

“Nana, can I bring that shinobi home?” He asked. His nana looked shocked. Kakashi sighed again.

“Look kid, I know I’m awesome, but I don’t listen to little kids like you. And I’m a Konoha shinobi, not a renegade-for-hire. Want a bodyguard, look elsewhere.” The boy bristled, and he opened his mouth to yell.

Kakashi stooped quickly and grabbed his chin. “Look, I don’t even ****ing remember your name, and I don’t want to.” He hissed, “I just want this mission to be over with so I can go home and SLEEP. I had a mission last night at about one in the morning, and I am ****ing TIRED. So just get this over with so I don’t have to hear your whining anymore, okay? Understand, kid?”

The boy nodded, eyes wide. Kakashi stood and glared down at him. “Good. Now finish doing whatever the hell you’re doing so I can leave. Or there will be blood. No mistake.”

Kitsune glared at Wolf, who sullenly met his eyes.

“...You said there would be blood if a child didn’t finish touring the city.”

Wolf nodded once.

“...You told him that you were tired and wanted to go home. That I understand. But threatening to kill him just so he’d shut up? If I could, I’d fire you. Unfortunately, I don’t have that happy power. So I’ll just leave it with Hokage-sama. It would be a waste of your talent to work in a shop somewhere or be a simple bodyguard, but if that’s what Sarutobi-sama says is best, I’ll back him. So sharpen up and quit being stupid.”

Then Kitsune turned, stalked to the window, and hopped out, down to the ground below. Then he raced off to get their missions for the night. Wolf leaned against the wall, wishing his squad would quit staring.

“...You got off pretty easy.” Tiger commented. Wolf grimaced.

“I know. I have no idea why. But that kid was asking his nurse if he could buy ME, and I can NOT stand for that. I am not a pet, to be bought and sold at will.” He glared at the wall opposite, tensed with rage. The others glanced at each other and shrugged, something they’d all picked up from Kitsune.

“Good luck with smoothing your record.” Cobra commented, straightening her ponytail. Wolf snorted.

“Yeah right. I’ll need Kami’s influence to get Kitsune-sama to forget this for even a second. He’s gonna hound me forever, I can feel it...”

Naruto slammed his foot into the dummy, which flew across the training grounds. He growled and stomped after it. All the other students stared at him, awe on their small faces. Iruka-sensei watched him warily.

“Er, Naruto-san, is, um, is something wrong?”

“Oh, everything’s just peachy.” Naruto snarled, grabbing the dummy and shooting a glare over his shoulder at them.
“And you should be practicing like the good little soldiers you are, idiots. Seriously, how are you going to even merit chunin rank if you can’t keep focused? That’ll kill you, you idiots. And I won’t be one of your mourners.”

Kakashi lay in bed wondering. That mission had been frightfully easy. He began to suspect that no one was letting him go on the dangerous missions. And he always had to take the ones that kept him close to home. If anyone found out or suspected he was an ANBU... he didn’t want to think what would happen. All his birdies would clam up, knowing he was part of the strongest branch of military Konoha could offer, and one of the most reliable.

For information, that is.

Kakashi sighed and closed his eyes. Kitsune had been... unusual. Like he was disappointed with Kakashi. He probably was. But... it was odd that a small boy like Kitsune would be disappointed with a grown man who was his subordinate. What was going on? First Kitsune smiled at him, then he went easy on him, then he was disappointed, which meant he’d been proud of Kakashi.

That... couldn’t be right... it was too weird...

Kakashi turned over and tried to sleep. He failed, of course. It was hard to sleep with a thousand questions buzzing around in his head. And he was wondering... Kitsune had to be going to school. He had to be in the academy. And he always looked so tired... but why did Kakashi care? Kitsune was Kitsune and would always remain as such. His superior, his captain.

Oh, how wrong Kakashi would be proved...

“I’m resigning.”

No one spoke. The still summer air hardly stirred under the branches of the trees around them. All of them were staring at their captain, who looked grim.

“I can’t do this and still go to school. I have to give up one, and since I can hardly stop school, I’m resigning. Sarutobi-sama knows, and he agreed to it. So either appoint someone now, or wait til I find myself a replacement. I’m not going on missions with you anymore, however. I’ll be sleeping too much to care.”

Everyone chuckled slightly, except for Wolf. He was staring hard at Kitsune, who ignored him.

“So, who wants the title of captain? I don’t wanna have to search a whole pile of papers just to replace me. I need a volunteer who’ll do the searching for me, or keep the job.”

Immediately, everyone turned to stare at Wolf, who blinked and looked at them.

“Wha- No! No, I refuse! I’m not gonna give up all my life to doing shit like sort papers! I much prefer babysitting to that!”

“Too late.” Kitsune said smoothly, “You’ve been chosen by popular demand. Get ready for an onslaught of pain and paper. Everyone else, show no mercy. Bye.”

Then Kitsune took off his mask, grinned, and teleported.

Silence in the clearing. Then the yelling and shrieking and roars of “DID YOU KNOW?!” filled the clearing. Only Wolf was silent and still.

“...Uzumaki Naruto...” He murmured, eyes glazed, “I should have known...”

Naruto snuggled into his bed, relieved to be able to lie down on a real mattress, not a hospital bed. The sendings had been surprised when he changed into his pajamas instead of his uniform, and even more surprised when he told them to wake him at seven a.m. instead of eleven p.m.

“Sleep at last...” he murmured, smiling at the ceiling. Then he fell asleep, and dreamed of ramen dancing across his vision.
