Back when Americans first started noticing Naruto (before the anime, I believe) there was a prevalent theory:
We suspected Itachi to truly be evil, seeking to test his limits.
We hypothesized that Minato had been mentally twisted up in sealing Kurama (thought to be an incarnation of pure evil.)
Itachi's goal was to kill his master, Shisui. Minato wanted to unite the world against him, like Ozymandias.
Shisui, or "the third Mangekyō user," was a bit of a wildcard.
Minato & Itachi are genius counterparts compared to Naruto and Sasuke.
It was theorized to be set up as a bigger, badder version of Lee vs Neji.
My question is would you have preferred the fanbase's estimation of the plot?
Or what Kishimoto actually decided to do with it? (Obito, Madara, and even Nagato coming out of nowhere.)
Essentially, people expected Itachi and Minato to eventually be enemies of one another, and Konoha as well.Minato was the shadow Akatsuki Leader. A Big Bad.
Itachi would betray Akatsuki upon defeating Sasuke and awakening a stronger Dōjutsu. Another Big Bad.
Shisui was a rogue agent that even Akatsuki feared (basically, a beefed up Orochimaru)
Orochimaru would get the Sharingan and be pretty beastly.

This follows the themse of hard work spelled out in part one (that Kishimoto has abandoned.)Sasuke would have to reject his cursed bloodline (or have his eyes ripped out) and use raw skills.
Naruto would have Kurama ripped out of him, and rely on raw skill.

So Neji, Sakura, Lee, etc. would all become more like Chōji is now (Mid Kage-ish.)Nagato, Obito, Madara, Hashirama, etc. would never have been introduced.
We imagined the author focusing on developing the Konoha 12 as the plot unfolded.
