two things u got to keep in mind

Itachi would've kept his assignment which was the nine tails negato never spoke down to itachi & asked him for intel

Second by itachi being so insightful & actually knowing pains secret he had the power to stop negato so the paths demolishing of the village could've been prevented

On top of that tobi knew what was up not trolling but itachi> the akatsuki not cause strength but because intel one man had the power to bring down the whole organization

With the answer to the latter being an obvious no. Itachi does not have sensing abilities, he would not be able to just go and seek out Nagato's real body even if he had intel on his abilities.

Tobi ordered pein after itachi died, therefore if itachi was still alive the attack wouldnt have happened.

But lets assume itachi was alive and pein attacked. Itachi WILL NOT help konoha the way most people think. He would stay in the shadows and help the village. For example, he knows of nagato and that is one of the weaknesses of the paths. Once you know that they are puppets and the real one isnt there, you basically have to go after the real one. Therefore with this information from the very start (instead of konoha's intel division taking long to figure out jiraiya's message) konoha can send a tracking team for nagato, whilst others distract the paths

It would have been quite cool if Itachi went and faced Nagato while his paths were still in Konoha. Making them just fall and die if Itachi managed to kill Nagato & Konan.

By doing so he would not expose himself as a Konoha Shinobi.

He wouldn't defend Konoha as he would have to betray the akatsuki. I don't think the outcome would change either, Nagato wouldn't waste time blowing up Konoha and Konan would be more involved, so itachi would get taken out he may also use gedo mazo.
