the lighting in the first one is in more than 1 location, there's in the figure's face, there's in the back, and the sides, It looks chaotic to me IMO
ooo i thought you were saying there is a part where the light doesn't make sense. (being bright where it should be blocked)
Well the one in the background is wayyy back there. you can see because it's shining a little bit on the bubble looking part, but the bubbles are dark on the back showing that they are blocking the light. then the jagged c4ds are darker/have less of that light on them. they are blocking the light completely from our point of view. then the guy. that's all to create a ton of depth.
same with the red above his shoulder.
more than 1 lightsource isn't bad. it's just complex. it'd be one thing if the lighting is awkward because it's shining where it should be blocked, but even with multiple light sources they all make sense in how they are shinning and being blocked by things.
i understand the chaotic look. that's kind of the atmosphere i was going for. it's like a war type situation in space. So I tried to make it look as if this were a snapshot in that war. Also why the light and such is so chaotic and there is so many of them. It's cool if that's not to your liking.
i'm working on the tutorial at the moment btw. it'll probably help to see how it all came together.
