Genjutsu (幻術, Literally meaning: Illusionary Techniques) are techniques that are employed in the same fashion as ninjutsu, requiring chakra and hand seals. However, the primary difference between the two is that the effects of genjutsu are illusory; instead of attacking the victim's body, like taijutsu or ninjutsu, genjutsu techniques manipulate the flow of chakra in the victim's brain, thus causing a disruption in their senses.
"Oh, for all you know I would've been an illusion...>.o" Clearing his thought, "Well, Genjutsu affects mostly the senses, whether smell or touch or all of them. Once caught, one has to break the illusion using a couple of ways: 1)needs to stop the flow of chakra in their body 2)through intense pain 3)Another option is accessible only to Sharingan wielders. Members of the Uchiha clan can break or see through genjutsu using their Sharingan. 4) train their eyes (without Sharingan) to break genjutsu 5)strong smells...*catches breath* aight, there's times one can't really use it on someone that it's pointless in a battle, ie; for Byakugan user is also noted to be able to tell when genjutsu is being used...genjutsu primary goal is to subdue the opponent to be under your control." Ikiru stares at the sky, "well?"
Something to note is Genjutsu can never directly control someone's will or actions, only Sharingan genjutsus can do that. You can probe and may attempt to influence them into acting in a certain way, but ultimately the decision is theirs to take. This doesn't apply to involuntary actions (such as a knee jerking) that they have no control over but voluntary and conscious ones. You failed to touch on the fact that you need to use a chakra surge high enough in rank or sufficient pain to break an illusion. Before we proceed, read the following transcript which will detail how our Genjutsu will proceed as well as provide additional information on the subject. Make sure to read all of it.
The first step in realizing a genjutsu is observing for anything overly-obvious or something which would naturally probe your character's suspicion. In battle, I want you to observe even the smallest of disturbances in your surroundings and the slightest inconsistencies. I want you to notice, if a tree begins coiling around you, does it produce growing sounds as it emerges? If a fireball is shot towards you, does the heat of the technique resonate from it and make you feel like the temperature is rising? If you see an illusionary clone walking towards you, does it bend the grass when it walks? If you get burnt by something, does the wound sizzle as the burn is inflicted? Does the water beneath your feet ripple when you walk, or make any splashing sounds?
Pay very close attention to the senses a technique affects, its fundamental to breaking a genjutsu. If a technique doesn't specify the senses it affects, make sure you don't assume anything. Find other ways of seeing through the technique. Does the illusion respect the laws of reality? Does the illusion distort time and happen too abruptly and or does it distort the natural occurrence of events? I can't teach you how to realize every genjutsu, I can only teach you the concept of doing so. The rest is up to how much you take away from this training. One thing to bare in mind is, when you're trying to realize genjutsu, don't come up with extremely complicated thought processes or anything which wouldn't be realistic in the heat of a battle. I don't want you to "god-mod" or try to use knowledge your character doesn't have to break Genjutsus. You must be realistic and legitimate in the way you break genjutsus. I'd hate to be that guy who teaches his students to metagame their way out of illusions >_>
Additional Information I'd like you to read
1) Kai Release Method
( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion.
Using Kai to release Genjutsu is the simplest and arguably most common method. After performing a single handseal, the user will stop their chakra flow for a moment before spiking it to purge the opponent's foreign chakra from your body, hence releasing the illusionary technique. It can range from a C-Rank to an S-Rank technique, depending on the rank of the genjutsu you're trying to break. If an A-Rank Genjutsu is cast on you, you'll use an A-Rank Kai to release the technique. Keep in mind that even if you learn Kai, to break higher ranking genjutsus e.g. A-Ranks, you have to be of the right ninja rank (determined by posts). Also, it requires a single handseal to perform and so this technique can't be used against Genjutsus which paralyze/immobilize your body.
Other things to remember is, its a really uncreative method and some fights have rules stating either "one kai per battle" or "No Kai at all". Make sure to watch out for rules like this and don't become too dependent on using it. I don't think i've ever used Kai xD
2) Pain Release Method
Like you all correctly stated, Pain Release is the quickest but the most consequential of all Genjutsu Release methods. You can inflict this pain upon yourself in various ways e.g. removing a kunai to stab your arm or biting off your tongue. Usually people attempt to simply bite their tongue/the inside of their cheek but this seems like an invalid method.
1) Biting your tongue without removing it will break D-Rank Genjutsu at most
2) Biting off your tongue seems like a disgraceful/embarrassing method to use. Especially if you have to spit it out in front of your opponent. It will make them feel like they have the upper hand
3) The severe blood loss caused by biting off your tongue will give you about three turns to live (possibly less).
4) You can't talk anymore xD
And so as I say to all my students, never release a Genjutsu through biting off your tongue.
This is the chart of releasing genjutsus and the amount of pain you need to inflict on yourself:
D Rank: Chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu) C Rank: Low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek B Rank: Low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle A Rank: High ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold S Rank: EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off
Another nice way I learnt from Better to release Genjutsus is using the C-Rank Stone Spikes technique. When you realize a Genjutsu, whether it paralyzes you or not, channel your doton chakra into the ground and cause a single spike of earth to emerge. Angle the spike the depending on how much pain you want to inflict.
(Doton: Ganchūsō) - Earth Release: Stone Spikes
Rank: C
Type: Attack
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points: 30
Description: This technique lets the user create a few rock pillars that will protrude from the ground to skew the target. The rock pillars will even pass through obstacles to reach their target
If you're breaking a A-Rank or below gen, angle the spike to strike into your thigh or another part of your non-dominant leg.
If you're breaking S-Rank gen (and have no other options), angle the spike to emerge directly beneath one of your legs, to completely crush it up to the knee region. This will keep you standing up and block blood from gushing out of your body.
This method inflicts serious harm on to you and is only recommended if you have no other options. Sometimes this is the best method to use and so its better to take many wounds rather than fail to counter a Genjutsu. Also, this isn't a possible method to use when you're standing on water or a similar terrain. If you have a bio which can heal or take such wounds e.g. Hidan, Kakuzu, a medical shinobi, using Pain to release genjutsu is very tactical indeed. You don't waste a move countering one of their techniques by making full use of your bio's capabilities.
3) Full body surges
A full body surge is basically a technique which releases/leeks chakra out of every chakra point on your body at the same time. This sudden burst of chakra purges any foreign chakra residing in the body. A full body surge will break Genjutsu of one rank lower than it e.g. an A-Rank Surge breaks B-Rank and below Genjutsus. New rpers often only associate the word "surge" which lightning techniques, when in actuality all elements have potential to be full body surges.
Canon Full body surges
Nagashi (A-Rank)
Earth Release Armour (B-Rank)
Earth Spear (B-Rank)
Lightning Strike Armour (C-Rank)
Hardening Technique (S-Rank)
In our training, I'll not only teach you how to realize Genjutsu but also how to release yourself from the ones we learn. I've hired someone who you can cast all of the illusions you learn on and likewise he'll cast the same illusions on you. When you're under the effects of the genjutsu, I want you to recite out loud how you can logically deduce why you think you're within a illusion. Once you do this, you'll have to find a way to successfully break out of the illusion.
( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.
For the first technique, I'd like you to cast your partner in a genjutsu which changes a single feature about the battlefield itself e.g. makes a wall rise up, creates a pond or water source and etc. Quite a basic technique, doesn't require much explanation. After you do this, you will be cast in this illusion yourself and you will need to release yourself from it (via your preferred method be it pain, kai or a chakra surge) while reciting how you realize you're trapped in a Genjutsu out loud.
Questions to prompt you

Ikiru makes a Ration clone. "Run with me" he commands as they start running. Then as they run, he casts the illusion on his clone, while in the illusion the clone expresses the senses of a normal field with more grass and boulders in plain sight. Ikiru had formulated the illusion to have more rocks and softer landing properties that weren't as the original landscape that inhabited quite less grass and hard bedrock ground, laying around with one boulder in sight before the new laying ground. Given the as the illusion inhabited the original landscape just a bit afar from the stand point of stop to try reason the change. While as his own clone pondered with question of why his self stared at him in inquisitive notations, he remembered that the whole genjutsu training could had already started, the clone then looks around and checks his 5 senses list; 1) smell: nothing gave any false indication. 2) taste: inside the mouth of the clone, he tastes his saliva. 3) Touch: kneeling down to touch the ground, then it hit the clone, the ground was hard but he indications of preface gave knowledge that they had changed terrain but why would the ground then be hard as though they had not. The clone then;
Ikiru embanks the force and generated electric current through his body, and then he quickly notices he'd resisted the numbing for his first time! While upon excitement the clone had broke free and it quickly sized the chance to up Ikiru through the very same expressive trial. Ikiru quickly notes himself in the genjutsu as his area had lost it's complex terrain of bedrock that he'd noted as they had started running. Being the one who'd cast the jutsu on the clone and changed the terrain to test himself he'd already read the very concept of change in his terrain. "Kai!"
Ikiru returns to the real world and undoes the clone in doing so, he gains it's knowledge. "I do wonder, can I make another me appear? As well the lighting in a room? I noticed that it affects, sight and only that. It's limited to 15 meters and to terrain only with sight as the influence of effect."
You can't use this to make people appear, though I think Lili-Chwan has a custom which does just that. Yes, it could potentially change the lighting in a room depending on your description and the terrain/your surroundings.

Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.
Ah, I was Part 1 Naruto today and just saw this technique in use for the first time. It isn't bad but I dislike the excessive use of handseals for such a low ranking technique. Now I'd like you to perform a string of five handseals to cause your partner to see you "dissolve" into a cloud of cherry blossoms. These same cherry blossom petals will move towards the opponent and cloud his/her vision, allowing you to mask your movements in reality.
Key Points: Lower ranking techniques tend to control less senses, this probably solely controls the sense of sight.

While within the genjutsu to the experience of jutsu, Ikiru learns of it's aspects as it's quite oblivious petals don't cloud vision out of the blue. He decides to release from it using kai method as he didn't prefer pain over simple inflections. "I'll preform it soon, at the moment I'd want to say that this jutsu is similar to a wind jutsu that seems to allow correlation of both components in battle. This allows one to fall within a a blossom of petals that hinder the vision of the victim. I don't like the jutsu as it deflects the whole idea of genjutsu." Ikiru makes five handseals, streaming genjutsu-chakra quite naturally he releases instantly a shower of cherry blossom petals covering his appearance from view.
For my genjutsu training, i want you to explain how you would find out that you're in the illusion and give me combinations with that specific illusion, for each technique. Get it? o-o like, if its an illusion that creates a fireball coming down at you, you'd tell me how you would deduce it as a genjutsu, like signs and whatnot, and you would also tell me how you would use the genjutsu in combinations.

Description: The user does one handseal and throws a paper bomb at the enemy. The enemy, trapped in a genjutsu will see a clone of the user advancing upon him. As the paper bomb reaches the enemy, it explodes
You basically take out a paper tag - an explosive weapon that is used mostly with ninjutsu and assassinations, but can be applied in genjutsu as well. Perform a single handseal and send your chakra into the targets' chakra system, disrupting it at the same time allowing you to cast an illusion. Right after, throw the paper bomb towards the enemy. To the target, they would see a clone approaching at the speed of the paper bomb, and the paper bomb explodes once it reaches the enemy, or it can explode through a single hand seal, since it is merely a paper tag.

In Form to deduce an illusion; 1) Logic flow, 2) 5 human/ shinobi basic senses, 3) Find meaning of the intended illusion's purpose, once found you could remember it, if used on you again.
Ikiru within the illusion, "First thing I'd always think about is the action taken regards to logic. I recall the grabbing of a paper bomb kunai then launching it, then a handseal...to summon a clone...where did the paper bomb head off to? Quickly then checking my basic senses that give applications to reality. Smell...seems undisturbed, I can hear so sound is also isn't played with. Taste within the inside of my mouth is intact, then as long as I could feel the temperature and the air around me, it implies that none nothing other than sight due to instantly making a clone rushing directly toward me. Then why would he make an illusion? He wants to inhibit me from dodging his attack. In this instance, I'd make my move toward ignoring the illusion as I'd leap upward and launching my kunai toward the main user instead. One question, how long do illusion stay active?" After through all his explanation, he releases himself out of the illusion. "Well, if I was to use this, I'd hide the very ideal of them seeing me make the handseal. This is be successful then when used." he gestures a hand's up.
The idea of one making a handseal before something implies a activation of some sort, which implies something must had taken effect. Checking if it's genjutsu first is always something to consider. Failing the test of reality implied he was in an illusion. Then he wondered why was the Genjutsu used and what purpose, resulting in all that. So back to my question, every illusion will take only one turn unless otherwise, right?
Alright then.
Generally speaking, an illusion will take place so long as the opponent doesn't break out of it. Their are exceptions, of course. For example, the above technique, the technique uses an object(paper tag) as the key for the illusion, and once the object (paper tag) explodes, there wouldn't be an illusion because the item would be no more.

Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.
his technique allows you to create numerous illusionary clones anywhere - from the ground, to the trees, and even at impossible angles. It acts as a distraction by making it seem like they are real close, when really, they are intangible. If they are struct, they appear to split in half and you can use this to co-ordinate attacks by, for example, throwing a kunai from behind an illusionary clone to make it seem like that clone was a real entity that actually attacked you.
How would you use this in battle (combinations?) and how would you find out it is an illusion?

Behind his sensei, "this jutsu allows one to take more of the advantage given in making multiple clones of one's self. If I was under this illusion I'd take note of the senses, one would be sight, as I might notice their shadows aren't there, or indication of their existence regards to the surroundings. Noise given as they approach or and finally scent. So one can tell, this illusion by noting the changes contributed to the area. For if their real, one of them would step on a leaf and it would bend etc. For if I was to use this, I'd first cover my presence then perform it to over throw my enemy."

Description: The user performs two handseals causing it to appear as if a swirl of leaves surrounds the opponent. The swirl eventually falls away, and after a few seconds, the opponent sees the image of whatever they fear the most, shocking them and potentially causing them to faint.
Now, for the sake of the RP - you aren't able to specifically state how exactly the enemy reacts from the illusion of seeing their worst fears. As shown in the anime, whether or not these affects apply depends on the skills and experience of the target. For example, Sakure fainted at the sight of Sasuke wounded as a result of Kakashi's illusion, but after timeskip, after she's gained a fair amount of experience, the same illusion did not alarm her. The extent of trauma you can create through this technique is limited to only fainting.
This illusion makes the opponent see the image of what they fear the most. How would you find out it is an illusion, and how owuld you skillfully use it in battle?

Sitting after experiencing the illusion, "while this illusion states itself as an illusion, it hits home into one's fears as there's always a fear hidden within the best of very one. One's fear could simply make the very genjutsu an S-rank effect(fainting as final) while another seem simple yet differ to them as a threat. With the vision hindering at the beginning of the stage, this can be taken advantage of. I'd use this genjutsu once I have activated my sharingan, then I will be within their minds to understand who the enemy is from this very genjutsu. While used upon me, I'd have to activate Kai/elemental release to awake. I find this to also make the opponent rather even empowered depending on their personality. One's fear could be their greatest motivation. Fear is not only an unpleasant emotion; it also means weakness. That's why no one likes to admit that he is afraid all the time. It makes him look like a coward, a weakling..." saying as he sits down<

>"I became afraid only because I freely chose to hate and to attack. For hate/attack is the cause and fear, hate must father fear. In my case the illusion will only enhance my intents in acting." Ikiru smoothly and slowly streaming Nagashi through his body, the illusion fades.
Alright, good, but next time, tell me exactly HOW you noticed it as an illusion, like what part of it did not look real to you, thus indicating it as an illusion?
And i don't like that particular technique because you can't really dictate/know what the enemy fears the most, unless you've had extensive contact w them in your bio history/NW. ;p

This illusion is VERY simple. You cast it upon a moving target, making them believe they are traveling in a straight line when in reality, they are running in circles. The last sentence is funny cuz that probably won't happen, ahha.
It's really easy to find out that you are inside an illusion. How would YOU find out that you are in an illusion if this was used against you?
