Will Gaara's auto defence work if......?

gaara can control the sand on his own free will along side the aoutomatic defense, it cant perform jutsus or incase him becuase it needs gaaras guide to attack so yes it would be considered LESS powerful without gaaras controll
No, a conscious Gaara can make his sand lighter or heavier as well create more sand if need be. An unconscious Gaara does not have the ability to do this. The sand will protect him just like it did in the Chunin Exams but total control over the sand will be gone. Therefore it won't be faster since Gaara is not consciously controlling its speed as he did when the Raikage was about to attack Sasuke.
Gaara can't make his sand lighter or heavier... Oonoki is the one who did that. and while the sand on its own may not attack, it's defense is just fine. for an example look back to when Gaara was attacked by Yashamaru when he was just a child. Gaara had little control over anything at that time but the sand completely neutralized the attacks of Yashamaru, a Sand Anbu shinobi. as for the raikage/sasuke thing, it is true that gaara controlled it but that was both an attack and the defense of another person, not of himself. gaara controls sand all the time, especially to attack, but the sand does protect gaara of its own accord
